Raintree Flooring: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

Real hardwood in bathrooms and basements used to be a non-starter — engineered or solid, the plank cupped, swelled, and ultimately failed when water sat on it. Raintree flooring changed that calculus with a waterproof engineered hardwood construction that bonds a genuine sawn wood face to a hyper-stable SPC composite core. The result is a real-wood floor you can install in a full bath, a laundry room, or a below-grade basement without voiding the warranty. Whether it’s the right pick depends on your priorities around authenticity, pricing, and warranty terms.

What Raintree Actually Is

Raintree is a waterproof engineered hardwood brand sold through specialty flooring retailers and a smaller online channel. The construction stacks a 1 to 2 mm sawn hardwood veneer (typically white oak, hickory, or maple) on top of an SPC composite core, with a pre-attached IXPE acoustic underlayment on the bottom. Total plank thickness runs 6 to 7 mm.

This is genuinely different from traditional engineered hardwood, which uses a multi-ply birch or HDF core that swells when wet. The SPC core in Raintree is dimensionally stable when exposed to water — that’s what makes the waterproof claim defensible.

Wear Layer and Surface Construction

The hardwood face is sealed with a multi-layer UV-cured aluminum oxide finish, similar to what Bruce and Bona Mega ONE deliver on prefinished hardwood. The finish carries an abrasion rating equivalent to AC4 laminate — significantly tougher than traditional polyurethane site finishes.

That said, the wear surface is real wood, not vinyl. Dents from dropped cookware, dog claws, and dragged furniture do happen. The hardness is whatever the species delivers — white oak Janka 1,360, hickory Janka 1,820, maple Janka 1,450.

Installed pricing for a Raintree floor typically lands at $10.50 to $15.00 per sq ft. That’s roughly $2 to $4 per sq ft above premium SPC LVP and $1 to $3 per sq ft below traditional engineered white oak from Mannington or Bruce.

Pros

The waterproof engineered hardwood category is genuinely useful. You get real wood underfoot — actual grain texture, real density, the warmth and acoustic properties of hardwood — in rooms where wood was previously out of reach. That alone justifies the premium for many remodelers who want consistent flooring throughout the house.

Installation is approachable. The click-lock floating profile works over concrete, plywood, OSB, and even existing tile (with appropriate flatness). No nails, no glue, no sanding, no finishing. DIY-friendly for confident homeowners.

The SPC core gives the plank dimensional stability that traditional engineered hardwood can’t match. Seasonal humidity swings that would crack site-finished oak don’t move Raintree planks at all.

Cons

The wear layer is real wood, which means it scratches and dents like real wood. The waterproof construction protects against water damage but doesn’t change the species hardness. White oak Raintree shows the same Janka 1,360 vulnerability to chair drags and dog claws as traditional white oak — the only difference is the substrate underneath.

Refinishing is not really an option. The 1 to 2 mm wear layer is too thin to sand and refinish more than maybe once over the life of the floor, and that’s risky. Traditional 3/4-inch solid hardwood refinishes five to seven times; engineered hardwood with a 4 to 6 mm sawn face refinishes one or two times. Raintree falls below that threshold.

Distribution is limited. The brand is sold through specialty channels and not widely stocked at national chains, so finding matching plank for repairs 5 to 10 years out requires homework.

Subfloor and Install Considerations

Even though the construction is waterproof, run ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity testing on concrete and confirm RH stays under 85%. The plank itself doesn’t fail, but excess moisture migrating up through the subfloor can support mildew growth in trapped air pockets.

Subfloor flatness needs to be within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Acclimate cartons in the install space for 48 hours at 60 to 85°F before cutting and installing. Use a tapping block during installation — never hit the plank edge directly with a hammer.

Leave a 3/8-inch expansion gap at every vertical surface and use T-mold transitions for any single run longer than 40 feet, the same as you’d plan for SPC LVP.

Raintree vs Premium SPC LVP

The decision comes down to wear surface preference. SPC LVP at $4.49 per sq ft material with a 22-mil wear layer is more scratch-resistant, more dent-resistant, and 30% to 40% cheaper than Raintree. The visual is photo-printed wood — good but not real.

Raintree at $8.50 per sq ft material gives you genuine wood underfoot. Real grain, real density, real character variation between boards. The tradeoff is a softer wear surface and a higher entry price. For a primary residence where wood matters — and where it matters enough that you’d otherwise have to break up your flooring at the bathroom door — Raintree earns its premium.

Best Use Cases

Raintree flooring is genuinely the right call for whole-house installs where you want hardwood continuity from the living room into the kitchen, mudroom, half-bath, and laundry room without breaking pattern at every doorway. It also works well in basement bonus rooms over properly tested concrete slabs where traditional hardwood would never have been a viable option.

Skip the line for entryways or mudrooms with heavy snow, road salt, and grit — those conditions abrade any wood wear layer faster than the warranty will cover. Skip it also for homes where future refinishing is part of your long-term floor plan.

  1. Pick the species based on Janka hardness — hickory at 1,820 outperforms white oak for high-traffic homes
