A range hood only gets your attention when it stops doing its job, and by then the kitchen is already filling with smoke and lingering grease. Fortunately, most range hood repair work is well within reach of a homeowner with basic tools, because these appliances are mechanically simple: a motor, a fan blade, a switch, some lights, and a duct. Fan Will Not Turn On

The backdraft damper is a set of small flaps that open when the fan runs and close to keep outside air out. Locate the damper at the hood outlet and at the exterior wall cap, clean the pivot points with degreaser, and confirm the flaps swing freely.
