Reflectix Insulation: Uses and an Honest Review

Few building products generate as much argument per dollar as the shiny roll at the end of the insulation aisle. Reflectix insulation — the foil-faced bubble wrap sold in rolls from 16 inches to 48 inches wide — is simultaneously oversold by marketing, over-hated by building-science forums, and genuinely useful in about a half-dozen specific jobs. The truth sits in one number: the material itself is only about R-1, and everything else it achieves depends on how you install it. What Reflectix Is

Reflectix is a brand (Reflectix, Inc., Markleville, Indiana) of double-reflective insulation: two outer faces of polished aluminum-metalized film bonded over one or two layers of polyethylene bubble pack, totaling about 5/16 inch thick. A 24-inch by 25-foot roll (50 sq ft) runs about $25-$32 at big-box stores, or roughly $0.50-$0.65 per square foot. It cuts with scissors, staples easily, weighs almost nothing, and doubles as its own vapor barrier since the film is essentially impermeable.

Where Reflectix Genuinely Earns Its Keep

Judge the product by the jobs it fits, and it fares much better than its reputation suggests:

  • Water heater blankets. Wrapped around an older electric tank in a cold garage, with the foil facing out and edges taped, it trims standby losses. A $25 wrap on a pre-2015 tank can save $20-$45 a year — real payback.
  • Garage doors. Cut panels to friction-fit inside the door’s steel channels, leaving the natural gap behind each panel. Where It Flops

Reflectix fails wherever someone treats it as a substitute for mass insulation. Stapled into wall cavities instead of batts, laid under laminate flooring as “insulating underlayment,” or wrapped tight around ducts with no gap, it delivers R-1 and disappointment. The worst misuse is as a standalone camper van wall insulation glued flat to the metal skin: no air gap means no radiant function, and the impermeable film can trap condensation against cold steel. Fiberglass batts cost less than either per unit of R. Reflectix wins only where its unique traits matter: places too tight, curved, damp, or temporary for boards and batts — wrapping a tank, lining a garage door channel, covering a window, capping a crawl-space vent for winter.

Installation Tips That Preserve Performance

Keep the foil clean and facing an air space, and seal edges with foil tape ($8-$10 a roll) where you want a vapor or draft seal. For garage doors, cut panels 1/4 inch oversize and bow them into the panel lips so the sheet stands slightly proud of the steel. On ducts, spiral-wrap over 1-inch spacer strips rather than pulling tight. Around water heaters, never cover the top of a gas unit or block the burner access and draft hood — wrap the tank body only, and check your utility’s rules; some offer rebates, others discourage wraps on newer high-efficiency tanks. And anywhere near recessed lights, flues, or chimneys, respect clearance requirements, because the film is combustible plastic under the shine.

A Worked Example: Insulating a Garage Door

The garage door job shows the product at its best, so here are the real numbers. A standard 16×7-foot double door has roughly 112 square feet of panel area divided into 16-20 recessed sections. One 48-inch x 25-foot roll ($55-$65) covers it with scraps to spare. Measure each recess, cut panels 1/2 inch oversize with scissors, flex them into the panel lips so they bow slightly toward you — that bow creates the air gap that makes the foil work — and you are done in under two hours with no adhesive, no screws, and maybe $60 spent.

Expect the interior surface of a sun-facing door to drop from painfully hot to comfortably warm on a 95°F afternoon; measured panel-face temperatures commonly fall 20-40°F. What you should not expect is a warm garage in January — R-1 per panel plus an air film is a radiant fix, not a thermal envelope. If winter workshop comfort is the goal, spend $220-$280 on a foam board kit instead, or combine both: foam in the panels for R-value, and a Reflectix roll left over for the water heater and the west-facing window. Add about 15 pounds total to a double door either way — not enough to require spring retensioning on most doors, though a door already struggling to balance deserves a check.

Reflectix insulation is a fine product wearing an oversized cape. Treat it as what it is — a durable, vapor-tight radiant barrier with R-1 of mass value — and it solves a specific set of problems cheaply and cleanly: hot garage doors, sun-blasted windows, sweating water heaters, radiant-loaded ducts. Treat it as wall or floor insulation and you will join the chorus of people calling it bubble-wrap snake oil. Buy it for reflection, not resistance, and you will get your $28 worth every time.
