The water line behind a refrigerator looks simple in store displays, but the actual plumbing involves a tee or saddle valve, a shutoff, 15 to 25 feet of tubing, and a connection at the fridge solenoid. Get any of those parts wrong and you get a leak that destroys subfloor before anyone notices. Each component has a job. The shutoff lets you cut water without affecting the sink. The tubing carries water from sink to fridge. The fittings make the connections leak-tight.
Tee Fitting Versus Saddle Valve
Plumbers will tell you to skip the saddle valve. They are right. Saddle valves clamp onto the supply pipe and pierce it with a small needle when tightened. They leak about 30 percent of the time within 5 years because the rubber gasket dries out and the puncture point corrodes. Most building codes do not allow them in new installations.
Use a tee fitting instead. Shut off the cold-water supply at the main, cut a section of the supply line below the sink, and install a 1/2-inch by 1/2-inch by 1/4-inch tee fitting. Tubing Choices
1/4-inch PEX tubing ($22 for a 25-foot coil at Home Depot) is the most forgiving choice for DIY installs. It bends easily, does not kink, and resists freeze damage better than copper. PEX is rated for potable water and works in any state that has adopted modern plumbing code.
1/4-inch copper tubing ($35 for a 25-foot coil) was the standard for decades. It looks cleaner along baseboards but kinks if you bend it too tight. Use a tubing bender ($18) to make turns with at least a 2-inch radius. Once kinked, copper restricts flow and needs replacement.
Braided stainless steel ice maker lines ($25 for 10 feet) are the premium choice. They resist mice, rats, and accidental kinks. Use them in any installation where the line runs through wall cavities or near appliances that could pinch a softer tubing material.
Avoid clear vinyl tubing for permanent installs. It is rated for low pressure and develops algae growth inside the tube within 2 to 3 years.
Routing the Line From Sink to Fridge
The most common routing runs from the under-sink shutoff, along the back wall of the kitchen behind the toe-kick, and up to the refrigerator. This keeps the line accessible for service and hidden from view. Drill 1-inch holes through cabinet bases as needed and feed the tubing through plastic grommets ($1 each) to prevent abrasion on the cabinet edges.
Leave a coil of 6 to 8 extra feet of tubing behind the refrigerator. When you pull the fridge out for cleaning or repair, the coil unwinds and gives you the slack you need. Without that loop, tugging the fridge tears the connection out of the wall or the fridge inlet.
For installations where the fridge is far from the sink — across the kitchen or on a separate island — route through the basement or crawlspace and come up through the floor behind the refrigerator. This requires a floor penetration and proper sealing, but the line stays out of view and out of harm’s way.
Making the Connections
Cut tubing square with a tubing cutter, not a hacksaw. Burrs from a poor cut prevent compression fittings from sealing. Deburr the inside of the tube with the tool on the back of the cutter.
For compression fittings: slide the nut and ferrule onto the tubing, push the tubing fully into the fitting, then tighten the nut hand-tight plus one full turn with a wrench. Over-tightening crushes the ferrule and causes leaks.
For push-fit (SharkBite-style) fittings: push the tubing in until you feel two distinct clicks. The fitting grips the tube with a stainless steel ring and seals with an O-ring. To disconnect, push the release collar with a deburring tool.
At the refrigerator, the inlet is typically a 1/4-inch compression port at the back of the unit. Some newer models use a push-fit quick-connect. Check your owner’s manual for the specific connection type before buying fittings.
Filling and Pressure Testing
Before powering on the refrigerator, turn the shutoff valve slowly to fill the line. Watch every connection for drips for at least 60 seconds. Even a slow weep at a compression fitting becomes a real leak within months.
The first batch of ice from a newly plumbed refrigerator should be discarded — it picks up any residue from the new tubing and filter. Most refrigerators recommend running 2 to 4 gallons through the dispenser before drinking, and discarding the first 3 cycles of ice (typically 24 to 36 hours).
Filters and Where They Go
Most modern refrigerators have an integrated water filter inside the fridge. Replace every 6 months or per the indicator light. Genuine OEM filters (Whirlpool, LG, Samsung) cost $30 to $55 each. Aftermarket filters from Waterdrop, IcePure, or Tier1 cost $15 to $25 and work equally well — just confirm the model number matches your fridge.
For unfiltered municipal water with poor taste, add an inline carbon filter (Watts WCBSCAR-FF, $35) at the shutoff valve. This pre-filters water before it reaches the fridge and extends the life of the internal filter.
Freeze Protection
Water lines running through unheated spaces — crawlspaces, garages, exterior walls in cold climates — freeze and burst below 20°F. Insulate the line with pipe insulation (3/8-inch ID foam tubing, $3 per 6-foot section). Common Mistakes
Skipping the shutoff valve is the single most common mistake. Without one, every filter change or fridge repair requires shutting off water to the entire kitchen.
Using a saddle valve “just for now” — they fail more often than they succeed. Pay the extra $20 for a tee and a real shutoff at install time.
Running tubing where it can be pinched — under refrigerator legs, around cabinet hinges, or under floor moldings. Pinched tubing fails at the kink point years later, usually while you are on vacation.
Skipping the service loop behind the fridge — the most common cause of broken water lines is someone pulling the fridge out without realizing the line was taut.
