A shower drain pulls double duty as the lowest point of your bathroom and the place hair, soap scum, and small toys go to die. Whether you are deep-cleaning a clogged trap, replacing a corroded strainer, or pulling the entire drain body for a remodel, removing shower drain components correctly prevents cracked tile, broken pipes, and leaks that surface six months later. The right tool turns a frustrating job into a 15-minute task. This guide covers strainer removal, full drain body extraction across the three common types, and the pro tips that separate clean work from collateral damage.
Identifying Your Drain Type
Before you touch anything, identify what you are dealing with. Shower drains fall into three categories.
- Threaded compression drain: The most common type in fiberglass and acrylic showers. The drain body screws into a rubber gasket compressed against the shower pan
- Solvent-weld PVC drain: Glued directly to the waste pipe. Common in tile showers with a mortar bed pan
- No-caulk drain (also called clamping drain): Uses a top flange that bolts to a bottom flange under the pan, with a rubber gasket between
Look at the visible strainer. Two screws on opposite sides usually indicate a threaded drain. A snap-in or single-screw strainer often sits on a no-caulk drain. PVC drains visible from below are obvious.
Tools You Will Need
The right tool list keeps a small job small.
- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers

- Channel-lock pliers
- Needle-nose pliers
- Penetrating oil — PB Blaster or WD-40 Specialist Rust Release
- Bucket and shop towels
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Putty knife
- Replacement gasket and plumber’s putty for reinstallation
The drain removal tool is the key item. Trying to extract a threaded drain with pliers slips, crushes the strainer crossbars, and often cracks the surrounding pan or tile.
Step One: Remove the Strainer
Most strainers attach with two Phillips screws on opposite sides of the cover, or with a single center screw. Apply penetrating oil to the screws, wait 5 minutes, and back the screws out slowly. If a screw spins without backing out, it is stripped — drill a 1/8-inch hole through the screw head and snap it off.
Decorative covers like Schluter Kerdi-Drain or Oatey designer grates lift straight out once a screw is removed. Older brass strainers may be threaded into the drain body itself — turn counterclockwise with the drain key tool to back out.
Once the strainer is out, peer down with a flashlight. You will see either rubber gasket and pipe (compression or no-caulk) or the inside of a PVC drain body (solvent-weld).
Step Two: Removing a Threaded Compression Drain
This is the most common scenario in fiberglass showers and tubs.
- Insert the drain removal tool into the drain opening, engaging the crossbars or notches
- Attach a 1/2-inch ratchet or T-handle to the tool
- Turn counterclockwise — the drain body will resist heavily for the first quarter turn
- If the drain refuses to move, apply more penetrating oil into the threads from above and wait 15 minutes
- Continue turning until the drain body lifts free of the pan
The threaded drain pulls straight up once unscrewed. Underneath, you will find the rubber compression gasket. Pull this out with needle-nose pliers and inspect for cracks. Replace if damaged.
For corroded brass drains that will not budge, apply heat from a hair dryer to the drain body — not a torch. The metal expands slightly and breaks the rust bond. Brass drains in 1980s homes are particularly notorious.
Step Three: Removing a No-Caulk Drain
The no-caulk drain has a top flange threaded into a bottom flange below the pan. The two pieces clamp the pan between them with a rubber gasket.
- Remove the strainer
- Use the drain key tool to unscrew the top flange counterclockwise
- Once free, lift the top flange out
- From below — typically through an access panel or basement ceiling — loosen and remove the bottom flange
- Push or pull the drain assembly out through whichever side gives clearance
If you have no access from below, the bottom flange stays in place and the drain is essentially permanent. For removal, you would need to cut the pipe below the drain and pull from above, then install a new drain with a coupling.
Step Four: Removing a Solvent-Weld PVC Drain
This is the hardest scenario because the drain is permanently glued to the waste pipe. You have two options.
First option — cut the drain body free. Use a reciprocating saw or oscillating multi-tool with a fine-tooth blade. Cut down through the drain body inside the pan, then around the outer circumference at pan level. The plastic separates into pieces you can lift out.
Second option — if the drain body is in good condition and you only need to access the trap, leave the drain alone and run a drain snake or auger from above. A Cobra Plumbers Hand Spinner ($25) clears most hair clogs without disturbing the drain assembly.
Replacing a solvent-weld drain typically means cutting back the waste pipe 3 to 4 inches and gluing in a new drain with a coupling. This is a 1-hour job for a plumber and worth the $200 service call if you are not comfortable cutting drain pipe.
Cleaning Out the Trap
Once the drain body is out, the P-trap or shower trap is exposed. Hair clogs accumulate at the trap entrance and the U-bend.
- Pull out visible hair with needle-nose pliers
- Wipe interior walls with shop towels
- Pour 1 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup white vinegar into the trap. Wait 15 minutes
- Flush with 2 gallons of hot water
- For stubborn buildup, use enzyme cleaner like Bio-Clean or Drano Max Build-Up Remover overnight
Skip chemical drain cleaners like sulfuric acid Drano on PVC or brass — they damage gaskets and accelerate corrosion.
Reinstalling the Drain
The reinstallation reverses the removal but the seal is what matters.
- Clean threads and gasket seats thoroughly with a rag and isopropyl alcohol
- Roll plumber’s putty into a 1/4-inch rope and lay around the top flange seat
- Install the new gasket if needed
- Thread the drain body in by hand first to avoid cross-threading
- Tighten with the drain removal tool until snug, then a quarter turn more
- Wipe excess plumber’s putty from the surface
- Reinstall the strainer with fresh screws
- Run water for 5 minutes and check for leaks at all visible joints
A properly installed compression drain lasts 20 to 30 years. Take the time to clean and seal it right and you will not see this job again until the shower itself comes out.
