Repairing Parquet Flooring: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

A neglected parquet floor in a 1920s home can hide spectacular oak underneath layers of cracked varnish, paint splatters, and missing blocks. Repairing parquet flooring rewards patient work more than almost any other DIY restoration project; a $400 to $1,200 weekend of effort can recover a floor that would cost $9,000 to replace. The key is knowing which damage can be fixed in place and which requires block-out-and-replace work.

Assess Before You Repair

Walk the entire floor and identify each issue type. Loose blocks announce themselves by rocking underfoot or sounding hollow when tapped. Lifting blocks have visible cupping or edges sticking above the field. Missing blocks leave a clean rectangular gap exposing subfloor or old bitumen adhesive. Cracked or split blocks show grain failure rather than seam separation.

Dry-fit each replacement before gluing. Sand or plane the bottom face if it sits proud of the surrounding field. Apply adhesive to the subfloor pocket only, never to the block face. Set the block in place and tap it flush with a rubber mallet through a wood block. Once cured for 24 to 48 hours, sand the replacement flush with the surrounding floor using 60-grit on a random orbital sander.

Filling Gaps Between Blocks

Seasonal humidity changes cause parquet to gap, especially in older floors where the original bitumen adhesive has lost its plasticity. Small gaps under 1/16 inch can be filled with a color-matched wood filler such as Timbermate or Goodfilla applied with a putty knife.

Larger gaps require thin strips of matching wood cut to fit and glued in place. Avoid the temptation to fill 1/8-inch or wider gaps with putty alone; the filler will crack out within a season as the floor moves.

Sanding and Refinishing

Once all block repairs are complete and cured, the entire floor needs sanding to blend old and new wood. Use a drum sander or belt sander for the field work, starting with 36-grit to remove the old finish and any height variation between blocks. Step up through 60, 80, and finish with 100 or 120 grit.

Edge sanders handle the perimeter where the main sander cannot reach. Hand scrapers or oscillating multi-tools take care of corners and the awkward intersections common in herringbone or basketweave patterns. Vacuum thoroughly between each grit step; trapped dust will scratch through to subsequent passes.
