A neglected garden trowel sits in the rain for two weeks and turns the color of a brick — that’s surface rust, the easy kind. The same trowel forgotten under a tarp for two years and you’re looking at flake rust, scale, and pitting that requires actual chemistry to remove. Rust removal products on the consumer market fall into five distinct categories, and matching the product to the rust severity saves you hours of scrubbing and the cost of replacing tools that were salvageable.
How Rust Removers Work
Rust is iron oxide, formed when iron reacts with oxygen and moisture. Removers either dissolve the oxide chemically (acids and chelators) or break the bond between rust and base metal mechanically (abrasives). The right approach depends on what you’re cleaning, how thick the rust is, and whether the underlying metal is salvageable.
Always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Rust removers strip protective coatings, etch chrome, and dull stainless steel finishes if you leave them on too long.
CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust)
CLR is a mild acid blend designed for bathroom and kitchen surfaces. It runs $6 to $10 for a 28-ounce bottle. Best for light surface rust on porcelain, ceramic, fiberglass, glass, and chrome — toilet bowls with rust rings, tub stains under leaky faucets, and shower head deposits.
Apply with a sponge, wait 2 minutes max, and rinse thoroughly. Do not use on aluminum, brass, copper, marble, granite, or terrazzo. CLR will etch these surfaces visibly within minutes. For rust on tools or steel parts, CLR is too gentle to make a real dent.
Naval Jelly
Naval Jelly (Loctite) is phosphoric acid in a thick gel that clings to vertical surfaces. About $10 for a 16-ounce jar. Best for moderate to heavy rust on iron and steel — wrought iron railings, garden tools, vehicle frame components, and outdoor furniture.
Brush on, let sit 5 to 15 minutes, and scrub off with a stiff brush. The phosphoric acid converts iron oxide to iron phosphate, which is black and inert. Some users leave a thin black layer as a primer base before painting; others rinse it fully clean. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection — phosphoric acid burns skin.
Bar Keepers Friend
BKF is oxalic acid in powder form, around $4 per 12-ounce can. It’s gentle enough for stainless steel sinks, copper-bottom pots, and porcelain, but strong enough to clear light to moderate rust. Sprinkle on, add water to make a paste, scrub with a non-abrasive sponge, and rinse within a minute.
BKF is my default for stainless steel and porcelain. The powder version (Original) cleans more aggressively than the liquid Cookware Cleanser. It’s the go-to for cast iron skillets that have surface oxidation but you want to save the seasoning underneath.
White Vinegar
The cheapest rust removal product on this list and the slowest. White vinegar (5 percent acetic acid) costs $3 a gallon. Submerge small rusted parts — bolts, screws, hinges, hand tools — for 12 to 24 hours, then scrub with a brass brush.
Vinegar handles light to moderate rust without damaging the underlying steel. It’s safe enough for tools you use with food (cast iron, kitchen knives) and for kids to use with supervision. The downside is time. Heavy rust often needs 48 to 72 hour soaks, and the smell lingers in workshops without ventilation.
WD-40 and Penetrating Oils
WD-40 is not actually a rust remover — it’s a water displacer and light lubricant. But the WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak (different formula) is genuinely effective. It runs $20 for a gallon and works as an immersion bath for rusted bolts and small parts. Soak 1 to 8 hours depending on rust severity.
For seized rusty fasteners, PB Blaster, Kroil, and Liquid Wrench outperform WD-40 by a wide margin. Spray, wait 15 minutes, and reapply before trying to break the bolt loose. These are penetrating oils, not rust removers, but they save countless rusted bolts that would otherwise round off or snap.
Evapo-Rust and Chelating Agents
Evapo-Rust is a non-toxic chelating rust remover at $25 per gallon. Chelators bond with iron oxide molecules and pull them off the surface without acid etching. The fluid stays effective until it’s saturated — you can reuse one jug to clean dozens of small parts.
This is the choice for restoration work where you want to preserve the underlying metal precisely. Antique tools, vintage hardware, and collectible items go into Evapo-Rust because it doesn’t pit or etch the way phosphoric acid does. Soak times run 30 minutes to 24 hours depending on rust thickness.
Mechanical Removal Tools
Sometimes chemistry is the wrong answer. Wire brushes ($5 to $15), bench grinder wire wheels ($20), and cup brushes for angle grinders ($10 to $20) physically remove rust faster than any chemical for thick, scaly oxidation. Sandblasting is the nuclear option for severe cases — DIY blast cabinets run $250 to $500.
For automotive panel work, rust converters like POR-15 and Permatex Rust Treatment chemically convert remaining rust into a paintable surface after mechanical removal cleans the bulk of it. This combination approach is standard for restoration shops.
