Walk-behind and ride-on power scrapers are self-propelled machines that strip huge areas fast, and rental yards carry them for roughly $150 to $300 per day.

The tradeoff is size and cost. A ride-on machine is overkill for a bathroom or kitchen and hard to maneuver in tight spaces, while the handheld SDS-Max tool goes anywhere, works stairs and closets, and costs a fraction to rent. Match the tool to the square footage, and do not rent a machine you cannot easily move through a doorway.

Prepping the Substrate for New Flooring

Scraping is only step one. After the old material is off, the real goal is a clean, flat substrate ready for whatever comes next. Scrape off every ridge of old thinset, because new tile or LVP will telegraph any bump underneath. On concrete, a follow-up pass with a floor grinder or a wider scraper knocks down residual adhesive.

Vacuum thoroughly with a shop vac fitted with a fine-dust filter, then check the floor with a straightedge. Fill low spots with a self-leveling compound and let it cure before installing your new floor. Rushing this step is the most common reason a beautiful new floor develops hollow spots and cracks within a year.
