Sound Dampening Drywall: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Noise from a neighboring bedroom, a basement music studio, or a shared apartment wall ruins a home faster than almost any other defect. Sound dampening drywall can reduce transmitted sound by 10 to 20 decibels compared to standard 1/2 inch gypsum board, which is the difference between hearing every word of a conversation through a wall and hearing only a muffled hum. How Sound Travels Through Walls

Sound moves two ways: airborne (voices, TV, music) and structure-borne (footsteps, slamming doors). Standard 1/2 inch drywall blocks roughly 33 STC (Sound Transmission Class) when installed on a basic stud wall. Each STC point reduction equals about a 1 decibel improvement in perceived loudness.
