A loose splice in a wall cavity is the leading cause of electrical fires after lightning and faulty appliances. Knowing how to splice electrical wire correctly — and where you are legally allowed to splice at all — protects your home and saves you the cost of a $200 service call for something that takes 90 seconds. This guide walks through the three connector types you will actually use, the NEC code requirements that matter for DIY work, and a step-by-step procedure for a textbook splice that will pass inspection.
The Single Most Important Code Rule
Every splice has to be inside an approved junction box, and that box must remain accessible. You cannot splice a wire and bury the connection inside a wall, ceiling, or floor cavity. NEC 314.29 makes that explicit. If you need to extend a circuit hidden inside drywall, the answer is to mount a junction box on the surface, cut access into the wall, or run new wire all the way back to the panel.
Inspectors look for buried splices. They are also the first thing a home inspector flags on a real estate sale. Save yourself the headache and follow the rule.
Tools You Need
A clean splice takes five tools.
- Wire strippers — Klein Tools 11055 ($18) handles 10 to 18 AWG
- Lineman’s pliers — for twisting solid conductors together if needed
- Voltage tester — Klein NCVT-3P ($25) or Fluke 1AC ($20) — non-negotiable
- Wire connectors — wire nuts (Wago lever nuts or Ideal Wing-Nuts), push-in connectors, or crimps
- Electrical tape — for backup and labeling
Add a junction box, a cover plate, and cable clamps if you are creating a new splice point.
Wire Nuts vs Push-In vs Lever Nuts vs Crimps
Four connector families dominate the residential market.
- Twist-on wire nuts: Ideal Wing-Nuts and 3M Twisters are the classic choice. Cheap (10 cents each), reliable when installed correctly, and rated for two to six conductors depending on size.
- Push-in connectors: Wago 221 or Ideal In-Sure. Strip and push. Faster than wire nuts and easier to remove if you make a mistake. About 30 to 50 cents each.
- Lever nuts: Wago 221 series. Open the lever, insert the wire, close the lever. Best choice for mixing solid and stranded conductors, which wire nuts struggle with.
- Crimp connectors: Used on stranded automotive and low-voltage wire. Less common in household line voltage but the right answer for some appliance and HVAC work.
For most household residential work, lever nuts or push-in connectors are now the fastest and most reliable choice. Many electricians have switched to Wagos for everything except very high-current connections.
Step-by-Step: Splicing Two 14 AWG Wires
This procedure handles a typical 15-amp circuit splice in a junction box. Adjust strip length and connector size for 12 or 10 AWG.
Step 1. Turn off the circuit breaker. Confirm power is off with your non-contact voltage tester by checking a known-live outlet first, then the wires you are working with.
Step 2. Strip 3/4 inch (around 19 mm) of insulation from each conductor using the 14 AWG slot on your stripper. Strip cleanly — no nicks in the copper.
Step 3. Hold the stripped ends parallel and flush with each other. For a wire nut, twist the bare conductors clockwise about three turns with your lineman’s pliers. For a Wago lever nut, just lift the lever, insert each wire to the strip mark, and close the lever.
Step 4. Spin the wire nut on clockwise until snug. Tug each wire individually — if any one pulls out, the splice is bad. Redo it.
Step 5. Push the spliced bundle gently into the junction box, leaving 6 to 8 inches of free conductor inside the box for future service. Install the cover plate.
Step 6. Restore power and test the circuit.

- Black or red: hot — connect to other hots
- White: neutral — connect to other neutrals
- Bare copper or green: ground — connect to other grounds and to the box if metal
If you find white wires being used as hot conductors in a switch loop, the proper convention is to wrap a strip of black electrical tape near both ends to mark them as hot. Older homes (pre-2011 in most jurisdictions) may not have this marking — work carefully and test before assuming.
