Walk under any modern parking garage or commercial mezzanine and look up. That corrugated ribbed metal sheet bonded to the concrete above is steel deck, and it is doing more structural work than most people realize. Steel deck flooring serves as both formwork for the wet concrete pour and as permanent tension reinforcement for the cured slab. It also shows up in residential additions, garages, and ADU construction where long spans or fire-rated assemblies matter.
How Steel Deck Works
Steel deck is a roll-formed sheet of galvanized or painted steel, typically 22 to 16 gauge thick, with corrugations that create longitudinal ribs every 6 to 12 inches across the width. The ribs add bending stiffness, allowing the deck to span between joists or beams without intermediate support during the concrete pour.
Once concrete is placed and cures, the deck becomes composite floor structure. Embossments stamped into the side walls of each rib create mechanical interlock with the concrete, so the steel and concrete act as one beam under load. This combined system can span 10 to 14 feet between supports while carrying 100 to 250 pounds per square foot of live load.
Common Steel Deck Profiles
- Form deck (1/2 inch to 1 inch rib): Lightweight non-composite deck used as a stay-in-place form. Concrete carries the structural load alone.
- Composite floor deck (1.5 inch, 2 inch, or 3 inch rib): Embossed sidewalls bond with concrete to create composite action. The most common residential and light-commercial choice.
- Roof deck: Wider ribs at 1.5 to 7.5 inches, used for low-slope commercial roofs. Not interchangeable with floor deck despite similar appearance.
- Cellular deck: Floor deck with a flat plate welded to the bottom of the ribs, creating enclosed cells used as electrical raceways.
For residential additions and ADUs, 1.5VLI or 2VLI composite deck in 20 gauge is the typical specification, running $1.40 to $2.50 per square foot in material cost.
Where Steel Deck Belongs in Homes
Most single-family homes use wood-framed floors with plywood subfloor. Steel deck enters the conversation in a few specific scenarios. Garage floor mezzanines over a 24-foot span need either deep wood I-joists or steel deck on steel beams. Steel wins on fire rating and floor depth. Detached ADU floor systems over a garage benefit from the 2-hour fire-rated assemblies that steel deck and concrete deliver inexpensively.
Heavily loaded areas like home gyms with squat racks (1,000+ pound point loads), workshop floors holding metal lathes, or wine cellars storing 4,000-bottle racks may exceed the capacity of a typical wood floor. Steel deck with a 4-inch concrete topping handles those loads with room to spare.
Pros of Steel Deck Flooring
Several real advantages drive its commercial dominance and growing residential use. Long unsupported spans reduce the number of interior beams or columns required. A typical 20-gauge 2-inch composite deck handles 10 feet between supports with no shoring. Heavier gauges hit 14 feet.
Fire resistance is built in. A 4-inch normal-weight concrete topping on composite deck achieves a 2-hour UL listed fire rating without additional protection on the underside in many assemblies. That matters for code-required separation between attached garages and living space.

- Fast installation: A two-person crew can place 1,500 sq ft of deck per day. No formwork to strip after the pour.
- Termite and rot proof: Galvanized steel does not rot, attract termites, or absorb water.
- Dimensional stability: Unlike wood, the deck does not shrink, cup, or creep under sustained load.
- Recyclable: Steel deck contains roughly 25 percent recycled content and is 100 percent recyclable at end of life.
Cons and Tradeoffs
Steel deck is not a finished floor. It is a structural assembly. Concrete must be poured over it, which means scheduling a pump truck, finishing the surface, and waiting 7 to 28 days for cure before tile, vinyl, or any finish goes down. That extra time and cost is the biggest drawback for residential remodels.
Acoustic transmission can be an issue. A bare deck-and-concrete assembly transmits footfall sound like an open shower. Mitigating this requires an acoustic underlayment between deck and concrete, plus a rubber mat or resilient flooring on top. Plan for IIC 50+ assemblies in any space below a bedroom.
Connection to wood framing is non-trivial. You need a steel ledger, embedded plate, or specialty hanger to terminate the deck at exterior wood walls. Mixing materials adds engineering and inspection complexity.
How to Buy and Specify
Steel deck is a manufactured product covered by SDI (Steel Deck Institute) standards. When sourcing, specify these items clearly:
- Profile: 1.5VLI, 2VLI, 3VLI, or W3 Formlok are common. Match to your span and load.
- Gauge: 22, 20, 18, or 16. Lower number means thicker steel. 20 gauge fits most residential.
- Finish: G60 or G90 galvanized for moisture exposure, prime painted for dry interior.
- Length: Order panels to the exact span. Standard widths are 24, 30, or 36 inches.
- Composite topping concrete strength: 3,000 to 4,000 psi normal-weight or lightweight.
Major manufacturers include Vulcraft (a Nucor brand), New Millennium Building Systems, ASC Steel Deck, and Verco. Material lead times run 2 to 6 weeks depending on profile and gauge.
Installation Basics
Deck panels lap at end joints (typically 1.5 to 2 inches) and side-lap with button-punched, screwed, or welded fasteners every 36 inches. Bearing on supports must be at least 1.5 inches on steel and 2 inches on masonry. Use puddle welds, screws, or powder-actuated fasteners (PAFs) every 12 inches at supports to anchor the deck.
Edge forms attach to the perimeter to contain the wet concrete. Pour concrete to the deck manufacturer’s specified slab depth, typically 4 to 6 inches total. Welded wire fabric or rebar at mid-depth controls shrinkage cracking.
Cost Summary
Bare deck material runs $1.40 to $2.50 per sq ft. Installed deck (just the steel) lands around $4 to $6 per sq ft. Add concrete topping at $5 to $9 per sq ft installed, and you are at $9 to $15 per sq ft for a finished structural deck before flooring. Compare that to a wood-joist subfloor at $6 to $9 per sq ft, and the steel option costs roughly 50 percent more. For long spans, fire-rated assemblies, or heavy loads, the upcharge is worth it. For a typical 12×14 bedroom over a basement, conventional wood framing remains the value play.
