T and G flooring remains the gold-standard joint for solid hardwood, real engineered timber, and high-end softwoods because it produces a tighter, quieter, longer-lasting floor than any modern click system. The catch is that T and G floors require glue or nails, professional fitting in most cases, and a flatter subfloor than floating click product tolerates. What T and G Actually Means
Tongue and groove describes a milled edge profile where one side of every board has a protruding tongue and the opposite side has a corresponding groove. Boards interlock along their long edges and ends, then get fastened to a subfloor with nails, staples, or adhesive. The joint blocks dust, eliminates board-to-board movement, and transmits load across the floor field rather than concentrating it on individual planks.
This profile dominates solid hardwood, traditional engineered wood (the 4-ply Baltic birch core kind, not modern HDF cores), and premium softwood flooring like Douglas fir and southern yellow pine. Modern click-lock systems mill a similar profile but add locking shoulders that interlock vertically as well, allowing floating installation. True T and G has no vertical lock — that is what distinguishes the two.
Pros of T and G Flooring
The advantages are mostly structural and acoustic. A glued or nailed T and G floor moves with the building rather than as a separate floating layer, which means fewer squeaks, less foot rebound, and a noticeably more solid feel underfoot. Nail-down requires either a dedicated floor cleat nailer (Bostitch MIIIFN at $400 retail or daily rental at $45) or a pneumatic stapler with the right gauge. Get the angle or pressure wrong and you split tongues all morning.
Subfloor flatness is the second issue. T and G tolerates a maximum 3mm deviation over 3 meters before joints start gapping or tongues split during install. That standard is achievable but rare in older homes — count on $2 to $5 per sq ft for self-leveling or sister-joist bracing on suspect subfloors before the actual flooring goes down.

Add $3 to $7 per sq ft for professional installation. Site-finishing on solid T and G adds another $2 to $4 per sq ft for sanding and a three-coat polyurethane.
Installation Methods
Three methods cover essentially all T and G installations. Each has its place.
Nail-down works on plywood or OSB subfloors at least 5/8 inch thick. Use 18-gauge cleat nails or 16-gauge staples through the tongue at 6 to 8 inch spacing. The first three rows often need face-nailing because the cleat gun cannot fit against the wall. Material cost for fasteners runs around $0.15 per sq ft. This method delivers the best long-term hold and is required for solid hardwood over 3/4 inch thick.
Glue-down is the only viable method over concrete and the preferred method for engineered T and G. Use a moisture-cure polyurethane like Bostik BEST, Mapei Ultrabond ECO 995, or Sika AcouBond. Material cost adds $0.85 to $1.30 per sq ft. The floor walks immediately and reaches full cure in 24 hours.
Floating is rare with true T and G but possible on engineered product if the manufacturer specifically approves it. Most floating installs use click product, not traditional T and G — check the spec sheet before assuming.
Common Installation Mistakes
Three mistakes account for most callbacks. First, insufficient acclimation — boxes must sit in the install space for 7 to 14 days at the building’s normal humidity before fitting. Second, missing expansion gaps at perimeters — even nailed solid hardwood needs 12 to 15mm gaps under skirting to handle seasonal movement. Third, blind-nailing only — the first row and last row almost always need face-nailing supplemented with adhesive, then plugged or filled.
When T and G Beats Click Systems
Specify T and G when the budget supports professional installation, the room calls for solid or true engineered timber rather than HDF-core product, and you want a floor that lasts 60-plus years with refinishing. For renters, investment properties, or basements over slab where moisture risk is real, modern click LVT or laminate often wins on practicality. For a primary-residence main floor in solid hardwood, T and G remains the right answer and always will be.
