Spotting a swarm of winged insects near your home triggers an immediate question with real financial stakes: is that a termite or just a flying ant? The Wings: Length and Symmetry

Wings tell the second part of the story. Both insects have two pairs, but the proportions differ dramatically.

  • Termite wings are all the same length, and both pairs extend well past the tip of the body, making the insect look much longer than its body alone. Termite wings are also fragile and shed easily; finding piles of equal-length discarded wings on windowsills is a classic termite sign.
