Thick LVP: What “Thick” Actually Means and When It’s Worth Paying For

Walk into any flooring showroom and a salesperson will steer you toward the planks that feel substantial in your hand. But thick LVP isn’t a single spec — it’s two completely different measurements that homeowners constantly confuse. Overall plank thickness is measured in millimeters; the protective wear layer on top is measured in mils. A floor can be thick overall and still scratch easily, or be thinner overall and outlast a dog with long nails. Knowing the difference is the single best way to avoid overpaying for the wrong thing.

Two Numbers That Get Confused Constantly

Overall thickness describes the full plank, from the bottom of the click joint to the top of the finish. Entry-level luxury vinyl runs around 4mm to 5mm, mid-grade sits at 6mm to 6.5mm, and premium rigid-core products reach 7mm to 8mm or more. The wear layer is a separate clear film on the very top, and it’s quoted in mils — one mil equals one-thousandth of an inch. Common wear layers are 6 mil, 12 mil, 20 mil, and 28 mil.

Here’s the trap. A 5mm plank can carry a 20 mil wear layer, while an 8mm plank might ship with only 12 mil. The overall millimeter number tells you about stability and feel; the mil number tells you about scratch and scuff resistance. Buy on both, never just one.

Why Overall Thickness Matters

A thicker core does three things you’ll actually notice. It bridges minor subfloor imperfections better, so a slightly wavy slab or an old plywood floor shows through less. It makes the click joints stronger and easier to lock, which matters during a DIY install when you’re tapping planks together by hand. And it adds a touch of rigidity that keeps the floor from feeling hollow or tinny underfoot.

Most rigid-core LVP today is either SPC (stone plastic composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite). SPC is denser and more dimensionally stable in rooms that swing in temperature, like a sunroom or a space over a garage. WPC is a bit softer and warmer underfoot but slightly less stable. For a 6mm plank, expect to pay roughly $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot; premium 8mm SPC with a thick wear layer can run $5 to $7.

Why the Wear Layer Matters More Than People Think

If you have kids, pets, or a busy entryway, the wear layer is where you should spend. A 6 mil wear layer is fine for a guest bedroom or a closet. A 12 mil layer handles a normal living room. For a kitchen, hallway, or any household with a large dog, step up to 20 mil. Commercial spaces and homes that take real abuse justify 28 mil.

  • 20 mil: heavy residential, pets, busy kitchens and halls
  • 28 mil: light commercial and the toughest home conditions

A thicker wear layer doesn’t just resist scratches — it also holds the embossed texture and printed grain longer, so the floor keeps looking new instead of buffing to a dull shine in traffic lanes.

Thickness, Sound, and Comfort

Thicker planks generally sound quieter and feel warmer, but the attached underlayment matters just as much. Many 6mm and thicker products come with a pre-attached IXPE or cork pad that absorbs footfall and softens the click of hard heels. If your planks already include a pad, do not add a second separate underlayment beneath them — doubling up creates too much flex, which stresses the joints and can cause them to separate over time.

In a condo or a second story, check the IIC and STC sound ratings on the spec sheet. A thicker plank with a quality attached pad will typically post better numbers, which can be the difference between passing and failing an HOA sound requirement.

Where Thick LVP Pays Off — and Where It Doesn’t

Spend on thickness and a heavy wear layer in the rooms that earn it: kitchens, mudrooms, main hallways, and open-concept living areas. In a low-traffic guest room or a small closet, a 5mm plank with a 12 mil wear layer is plenty, and the savings add up fast across a whole house. Matching the floor to the room beats buying the thickest plank everywhere.

One more practical point. Thicker LVP raises your finished floor height, which affects how doors swing and how transitions meet adjoining rooms. If you’re not replacing every floor at once, measure the height difference and plan for transition strips or a small door trim before you order.

Installation and Subfloor Considerations

Thicker rigid-core LVP is generally more forgiving to install, but it isn’t a license to skip prep. The core can bridge small dips, yet a subfloor that’s out of flat by more than about 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span will still cause the planks to flex, click apart, or develop a hollow sound in spots. Run a long level or straightedge across the floor first, then grind down high spots and fill low spots with a patching compound or self-leveler. On concrete, also check for moisture — even waterproof planks can trap vapor against a damp slab and grow mildew underneath if there’s no barrier.

Thicker planks also need a proper expansion gap around the perimeter, typically around 1/4 to 3/8 inch, hidden under the baseboard or quarter round. Rigid-core floors expand and contract with temperature swings, and a tight install with no gap is the number one cause of buckling in sunrooms and rooms with big seasonal changes. Acclimate the boxes in the room for a couple of days before installing so the planks settle to the home’s temperature.

Comparing Thick LVP to Other Floors

It helps to see where thick LVP sits against the alternatives. Compared to laminate, quality thick LVP is genuinely waterproof rather than just water-resistant, which is why it has largely taken over kitchens and bathrooms. Against engineered hardwood, LVP can’t be sanded and refinished, but it costs less, resists water far better, and never needs the periodic resealing that real wood demands. Versus tile, thick LVP is warmer, softer, and quieter underfoot, and it’s a weekend DIY project rather than a mortar-and-grout job.

The one place thick LVP loses ground is resale prestige and the absolute longevity of solid hardwood. For most homeowners, though, the trade is worth it: a thick, well-specced vinyl floor delivers the look they want with a fraction of the maintenance and worry.

How to Read a Spec Sheet Before You Buy

Before committing, find four numbers on the product page or sample card: overall thickness in mm, wear layer in mil, core type (SPC or WPC), and whether an underlayment pad is attached. Then match those to your room. A busy family kitchen wants something like a 6.5mm SPC plank with a 20 mil wear layer and an attached IXPE pad. A quiet office can drop to 5mm and 12 mil and save you real money.

Always order a couple of full samples and walk on them in your own light. Thickness you can feel; durability you have to read. Get both right and a good vinyl floor will look sharp for 15 to 25 years with nothing more than regular sweeping and the occasional damp mop.
