Ripping out old tile is only half the battle. Once the pieces are gone, you are usually left staring at a crusty gray layer of mortar bonded to the slab, and tile thinset removal is the job that actually decides whether your next floor lasts. That leftover ridge of dried adhesive has to come off before anything new goes down, because a fresh layer of thinset will not bond reliably to an old, uneven one. What Thinset Is and Why It Fights Back

Cleaning Up and Prepping for New Tile
Once the bulk mortar is gone, vacuum thoroughly, then damp-mop to lift the fine dust that clings to the surface. Let the floor dry completely. Run your hand and a straightedge across the area to check for ridges, dips, and any spots you missed. A 6-foot level or a long piece of aluminum will reveal high and low points; aim for no more than 1/8 inch of variation over 10 feet for most tile.
