Anytime a bathroom floor gets thicker from new tile, LVP over subfloor, or a mortar bed under stone, the toilet flange ends up sitting below the finished floor level. A toilet flange extension solves this by raising the seal plane up to match. Skipping the extension and just stacking two wax rings is a common shortcut that leaks within a year, rots the subfloor, and lands homeowners with a $1,500 repair bill. The fix costs $15 in parts and 30 minutes of work.
What a Flange Extension Does
The flange is the round plastic or metal collar that anchors the toilet to the floor and couples it to the drain pipe. The top of the flange needs to sit flush with or slightly above the finished floor so the wax ring compresses properly and creates a watertight seal. When new flooring adds 1/4 to 1 inch of height, the flange ends up recessed and the toilet no longer seats correctly.
Extensions are thin rings, usually between 1/8 and 1/2 inch thick, that stack on top of the existing flange and raise the sealing surface. Most are made from PVC or polyethylene and simply screw to the original flange through the existing bolt slots.
When You Need One
If the existing flange sits below finished floor by more than 1/4 inch, you need an extension. Measure by removing the toilet, setting a straight edge across the flange, and measuring the gap between the bottom of the straight edge and the finished floor. Anything deeper than a wax ring can safely compress (about 3/8 inch) demands an extension.

The most common type is a simple plastic ring with bolt slots that match the original flange. Oatey and Sioux Chief both make these in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4-inch thicknesses for $8 to $18 each. They stack up to 1 inch and come with thick rubber gaskets that seal between layers.
Adjustable extensions let you fine-tune the height by rotating two threaded rings against each other. Fluidmaster and Korky make versions around $22 that cover a range from 1/4 to 1 inch. These are simpler on complex projects where the final floor height isn’t known precisely during the flange install.
Materials to Choose
PVC extensions match most residential plumbing and are the budget pick. Stainless steel reinforced extensions cost $30 to $50 and resist cracking under over-tightened bolts. Cast iron extensions exist for matching older iron flanges but are rarely worth the $80 price tag on residential jobs.
For flanges in bathrooms with heavy use, particularly commercial or rental properties, the stainless-reinforced versions pay off. The flange takes all the lateral force from toilet rocking, and reinforced rings survive abuse that cracks bare PVC within a year.
Installation Steps
The process takes 20 to 30 minutes and requires only hand tools. Start by turning off the water supply and flushing the toilet to empty the tank. Disconnect the supply line, remove the closet bolts, rock the toilet gently to break the wax seal, and lift it off. Set it on an old towel to catch drips.
Clean the old wax off the flange with a plastic putty knife and rag. Dry-fit the extension to confirm it sits level. Apply the supplied gasket or a bead of silicone between the extension and the original flange. Place the extension, align the bolt slots, and secure with stainless steel screws through the pre-drilled holes into the subfloor.
Seating the Toilet Correctly
With the extension installed, set a new wax ring on the flange. Never reuse an old wax ring; they compress permanently and won’t seal a second time. Common Mistakes
Over-tightening closet bolts cracks the porcelain base. Stop tightening as soon as the toilet no longer rocks. Further pressure doesn’t improve the seal and eventually splits the bowl. If rocking persists after snug tightening, shim with plastic toilet shims rather than forcing the bolts tighter.
Using two wax rings instead of an extension is the other classic mistake. Stacked wax rings deform unevenly under the toilet’s weight and often fail within 6 to 18 months. The leaks are slow, frequently unnoticed, and damage subfloor and ceilings below before anyone realizes.
Testing for Leaks
After reinstalling the toilet, turn on the supply valve, let the tank fill, and flush 3 times. Look for any water around the base. Check again in 24 hours with a paper towel wiped along the bowl-to-floor joint. Moisture means the seal failed and needs to come apart for a re-install with fresh wax.
A properly installed extension plus fresh wax ring should last 10 to 20 years without service. If you see weeping at the base within days, the flange is either cracked, not seated flat on the subfloor, or the drain pipe itself has an issue that an extension can’t fix.
