A tripped breaker is your electrical panel’s way of preventing a fire. When a circuit draws more current than the breaker is rated to handle — or a fault creates a dangerous condition — the breaker trips and cuts power to that circuit. It is a safety feature working exactly as designed. Understanding why it happened and how to respond correctly keeps you safe and helps you decide whether you can fix it yourself or need an electrician.
How to Identify a Tripped Breaker
Open your electrical panel cover and look at the breaker switches. A tripped breaker sits in the middle position — not fully ON and not fully OFF. On most panels, the handle points straight out or slightly toward the OFF side. Some breakers have a red or orange indicator window that becomes visible when tripped.
If multiple rooms or outlets went dead at the same time, the tripped breaker is likely a 15-amp or 20-amp branch circuit breaker. If the entire house lost power, check the main breaker at the top or bottom of the panel. Also check whether your utility company has an outage before assuming a breaker issue.
Three Reasons a Breaker Trips
Every tripped breaker falls into one of three categories, each with different causes and implications:
Overloaded Circuit
This is the most common cause. A 15-amp circuit can safely deliver about 1,800 watts; a 20-amp circuit handles about 2,400 watts. Running a space heater (1,500 watts), a hair dryer (1,200 watts), and a window AC unit (800 watts) on the same circuit exceeds the capacity and trips the breaker. The fix is straightforward: redistribute loads across different circuits or unplug devices you are not using.
Short Circuit
A short circuit occurs when a hot wire contacts a neutral wire or another hot wire, creating a path with almost zero resistance. This produces a massive current spike that trips the breaker instantly, often with a spark or a burning smell. Short circuits can happen inside an outlet, a switch, an appliance cord, or within the wall wiring itself. A burning smell near an outlet or discoloration on a faceplate suggests a short circuit that needs professional attention.
Ground Fault
A ground fault occurs when a hot wire contacts a grounded surface — the metal box, a pipe, or the ground wire. GFCI breakers and GFCI outlets detect these faults and cut power within milliseconds to prevent electrocution. Ground faults are especially dangerous in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets. If a GFCI breaker trips repeatedly, moisture may be entering a junction box or an appliance may have an internal fault.
How to Reset a Tripped Breaker
Follow these steps for a safe reset:
- Turn off or unplug the devices on the affected circuit, especially anything that was running when the breaker tripped
- Stand to the side of the panel (not directly in front) as a precaution against a rare arc flash event
- Push the tripped breaker handle firmly to the full OFF position first — you should feel and hear it click
- Then push it firmly to the ON position
- Plug devices back in one at a time to identify which one caused the overload
If the breaker holds, you are likely dealing with a simple overload that you have now resolved by reducing the load. If it trips again immediately, you have a short circuit or ground fault that requires further investigation.
When a Breaker Keeps Tripping
A breaker that trips repeatedly after being reset signals a problem beyond a simple overload. Work through this checklist:
- Unplug everything on the circuit and reset. If it holds with nothing connected, plug devices in one at a time. The one that trips the breaker is faulty — replace it or have it repaired.
- Check for visible damage. Inspect outlets, switches, and visible wiring on the affected circuit for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burning smell. Damaged components need replacement.
- Test with a different outlet. If a specific appliance trips the breaker, try it on a different circuit. If it trips that circuit too, the appliance has an internal fault.
- Check for moisture. Damp crawl spaces, wet basements, and exterior outlet boxes exposed to rain cause ground faults that trip breakers and GFCI devices.
AFCI Breaker Trips
Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breakers detect electrical arcing — the dangerous sparking that occurs when wires are damaged, loose, or corroded. AFCI protection is required by code on bedroom circuits and, in newer code cycles, on most living area circuits. These breakers are more sensitive than standard thermal-magnetic breakers and can trip from conditions that a standard breaker ignores.
Nuisance tripping on AFCI circuits sometimes occurs with certain appliances, particularly motors in vacuum cleaners, treadmills, and older power tools. If an AFCI breaker trips only when a specific device runs, the device may need replacement or may simply be incompatible with that breaker brand. Consult an electrician before disabling or replacing an AFCI breaker, as it provides critical fire protection.
When to Call an Electrician
Handle simple overloads yourself. Call a licensed electrician for these situations:
- A breaker trips immediately upon reset with nothing plugged into the circuit
- You smell burning near the panel, an outlet, or a switch
- The breaker feels hot to the touch
- The breaker will not stay in the ON position at all
- You see scorch marks or melted plastic on the breaker or the panel bus
- The same breaker trips repeatedly without an obvious overload cause
