Most homeowners only think about switches when one stops working or a remodel forces a hardware decision. Knowing the types of electrical switches on the market saves you from buying the wrong one twice and helps you have a real conversation with an electrician about wiring, dimming, and smart-home plans. Modern boxes house far more than the basic toggle Grandpa installed in 1962.

Single-Pole Switches

The single-pole is the workhorse, controlling one fixture from one location. Two brass terminals plus a green ground are all you will see on the back. Marked positions for ON and OFF make it easy to identify. A standard Leviton or Eaton single-pole runs $1.50 to $4 at any hardware store, and rated for 15 amps at 120 volts, which covers virtually every residential lighting circuit.

Use it for closets, bathrooms with one entry, pantries, and any room where the light only needs control from one spot. If you ever plan to add a second control point, run an extra conductor now — it costs almost nothing during framing and saves a wall demo later.

Three-Way and Four-Way Switches

Three-way switches always work in pairs. They let you control one fixture from two separate locations, which is why hallways, stairwells, and large living rooms specify them. Look for three brass terminals plus ground. There are no ON or OFF markings because the position depends on the partner switch’s state.

Four-way switches sit between two three-ways when you need a third control point. A long upstairs hallway with two bedrooms and a bathroom often runs three-way at each end and a four-way in the middle. Expect $5 to $12 per switch. Wiring gets complicated fast — if you are not comfortable tracing travelers, hire it out.

Double-Pole Switches

Double-pole switches handle 240-volt circuits or two separate 120-volt loads from one device. Four brass terminals, often paired in two banks. Dimmers used to be simple rheostats that wasted electricity as heat. Modern dimmers are electronic, and the type you buy must match your bulbs. The big distinctions are:

Smart switches connect to Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Matter networks and accept commands from apps and voice assistants. They almost all require a neutral wire in the box, which is standard in homes built after about 1985 but missing in many older properties. Lutron Caseta is the rare exception that runs without a neutral, paired with their bridge.

Motion Sensor and Occupancy Switches

Motion-activated switches detect movement using passive infrared (PIR) or ultrasonic sensors. Occupancy versions turn lights on automatically and off after a delay. Vacancy versions require manual on but auto-off, which qualifies them for Title 24 compliance in California bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Pantries, garages, basements, and walk-in closets all benefit. Expect $20 to $40 per switch. Set the delay to 10 to 15 minutes for general spaces and 1 to 5 minutes for closets where you are in and out.

Rocker, Toggle, and Push-Button Styles

Smart switches with bulky bodies and extra wires often push small boxes past code.
