The wrong choice of underlayment for engineered hardwood turns a $9-per-sq-ft floor into a noisy, hollow-sounding mistake within a year. Or it traps moisture and rots the subfloor under it. The right underlayment, sized for your specific installation method and subfloor type, adds insulation, sound dampening, and moisture protection that extends floor life by a decade or more. The choice depends on three variables most contractors do not bother explaining: install method, subfloor material, and what is below the room.

When You Need Underlayment at All
Glue-down installs over concrete generally do not use a separate underlayment. The adhesive itself acts as the moisture barrier and bond layer, and adding foam under it defeats the bond. Nail-down installs over wood subfloors use rosin paper or a thin felt as a slip layer, not a foam pad. Floating installs are where underlayment selection matters most.
If your engineered hardwood is click-lock or tongue-and-groove and being installed floating, you need underlayment. Period. Without it, the floor reads every imperfection in the subfloor, transmits sound to the room below, and lacks the slight cushion that makes engineered floors feel right underfoot.
Standard Foam Underlayments
The cheapest option, and the most commonly misused. Closed-cell polyethylene foam runs $0.20 to $0.50 per sq ft and provides minimal sound dampening. The 2mm and 3mm versions sold at home centers are adequate for low-traffic floating installs over wood subfloors.
Foam underlayment fails under three conditions: heavy point loads (heavy furniture compresses the foam permanently), installations over concrete without a separate vapor barrier, and rooms requiring sound transmission control between floors. Skip foam alone for second-floor installs in homes with bedrooms below.
Combination Foam Plus Vapor Barrier
The mid-tier option for floating engineered hardwood over concrete. Products like Roberts Super Felt with vapor barrier, QuietWalk Plus, and Floor Muffler UltraSeal combine 3mm to 6mm of cushion with an integrated 6-mil polyethylene barrier.

The integrated vapor barrier saves an installation step and reduces seam leaks. Tape all seams with the manufacturer’s recommended tape, not generic duct tape, which dries out and pulls free within months.
Cork Underlayment for Sound Control
Natural cork is the gold standard for sound dampening under engineered hardwood. A 6mm cork underlayment delivers IIC ratings above 70 and STC ratings around 56, which meets condo HOA requirements that disqualify foam products entirely.
Cork is dimensionally stable, naturally antimicrobial, and lasts the life of the floor without compression. The drawbacks are cost ($1.50 to $2.50 per sq ft) and the fact that cork is not a vapor barrier. Over concrete, install a separate 6-mil poly film first, then cork on top.
For engineered hardwood over hot water radiant heat systems, cork’s R-value of approximately 1.4 per inch is low enough not to block heat transfer significantly. Confirm compatibility with your specific radiant system manufacturer before specifying.
Rubber Underlayments for Heavy Use
Recycled rubber and rubber-composite underlayments handle the highest loads and best sound deadening. Products like Acousti-Mat 3 and ProFlex 90 are rated for commercial installs but work in heavy-traffic residential rooms like entries and family rooms with pool tables or pianos.
Rubber underlayment runs $1.20 to $2.80 per sq ft and is the most expensive standard option. It also requires a vapor barrier on concrete and weighs significantly more than foam, which adds shipping cost. The payoff is permanent: rubber does not compress or break down for the life of the building.
Underlayment for Specific Subfloors
Concrete subfloors below grade need a vapor barrier, full stop. Test moisture with a calcium chloride test or relative humidity probe before any install. Above 75 percent RH or 3 lbs CaCl over 24 hours, address the moisture source first.
- Plywood subfloor on second floor: 3mm cork or rubber for sound
- OSB subfloor over crawlspace: foam plus vapor barrier
- Concrete slab on grade: combination foam-vapor barrier minimum
- Concrete below grade: cork plus separate 6-mil poly
- Existing tile or vinyl: thin foam to bridge minor unevenness
Never install underlayment over carpet pad or remaining adhesive ridges. Both compress unevenly and cause floor failure within a year.
Radiant Heat Compatibility
Engineered hardwood works well over radiant heat, but the underlayment must have a low R-value to allow heat transmission. Foam underlayments typically have R-values of 0.5 to 1.0, cork comes in around 1.4, and rubber is 0.5 to 0.8. Manufacturer specifications usually cap total R-value at 1.5 between heat source and floor surface.
Specialty radiant-rated underlayments like Suntouch HeatMatrix or Schluter Ditra-Heat work with electric mat systems specifically. For hydronic systems, follow the floor manufacturer’s underlayment compatibility list to avoid voiding the warranty.
Installation Mistakes That Cause Failures
The most common underlayment errors I see in failed floors:
- Overlapping foam at seams creates ridges that telegraph through the hardwood
- Skipping vapor barrier over concrete leads to cupping and mold
- Using two layers of foam to address subfloor unevenness causes sponginess
- Stretching underlayment tight rather than letting it lay flat
- Failing to allow expansion gap at walls causes buckling
Butt seams together and tape, do not overlap. Acclimate the underlayment alongside the flooring for 48 hours minimum. Verify subfloor flatness within 3/16 inch over 10 feet before any install. Address the subfloor problems with self-leveling compound or sanding rather than relying on the underlayment to bridge them.
Picking the Right Product for Your Job
For a typical second-floor floating engineered hardwood install over plywood, QuietWalk Plus or 6mm cork delivers the best value. For ground-floor over concrete, combination foam-and-vapor products handle most situations under $0.70 per sq ft. For premium installs, condos, or rooms with heavy point loads, spend the extra $1 to $2 per sq ft on cork or rubber. The underlayment is 3 to 8 percent of total floor cost. Choosing right protects the other 92 percent.
