More LVP failures get blamed on “bad product” than on the real culprit, which is moisture migrating up through the slab and breaking down the adhesive or popping the click joints. Vapor barrier for vinyl flooring is the cheap insurance that saves a $4,500 install from becoming a $9,000 redo. This guide walks through when a vapor barrier is actually required, how to test the slab properly, which products work, and where you can skip it without voiding the warranty.

What Counts as a Vapor Barrier

A true vapor barrier has a perm rating of 0.1 or less. The most common product is 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, which runs $0.08-$0.15 per sq ft. Many click-lock LVP underlayments market themselves as vapor barriers but only deliver a perm rating of 0.5-1.5, which is technically a vapor retarder, not a barrier. For high-moisture concrete, you need the real thing.

When Vinyl Flooring Actually Needs a Vapor Barrier

Three conditions trigger the requirement:

  • Concrete subfloor on or below grade: Basement slabs, slab-on-grade construction, garage conversions. Always test, usually install.
  • Crawlspace over uncovered dirt or vented to outdoor air: Moisture migrates up through joists and plywood subfloor.
  • Manufacturer specifies it in writing: Most LVP brands now require a Class I vapor retarder over any concrete subfloor regardless of moisture test results.

You do not need a separate vapor barrier when installing LVP over a properly conditioned second-floor wood subfloor with finished living space below. The drywall ceiling and HVAC do the moisture management.

Test the Slab Before You Decide

Never assume a concrete slab is dry. Even slabs poured 10 years ago can move moisture, especially after heavy rain or seasonal swings. Two tests matter for LVP:

  • ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity probes: Drill holes 40 percent of the slab depth, insert RH probes, wait 24 hours, read the result. Acceptable is typically under 75-85 percent RH depending on the LVP manufacturer.
  • ASTM F1869 calcium chloride dome test: Place sealed domes on the slab for 60-72 hours and weigh moisture absorbed. Acceptable is usually under 3-5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours.

Installation Sequence That Prevents Trapped Moisture

Order of operations matters. Get this wrong and you trap moisture between layers and grow mold.

  1. Sweep and vacuum the slab. Patch any cracks wider than 1/8 inch with Ardex Feather Finish or Mapei Planiprep SC.
  2. Confirm slab moisture is within manufacturer spec via ASTM F2170.
  3. Roll out 6-mil poly perpendicular to the LVP run direction.
  4. Overlap seams 6-8 inches and tape with Tyvek tape or polyethylene seaming tape.
  5. Run the poly up the wall 2-3 inches; baseboard will hide it.
  6. Install acoustic underlayment if needed and not attached to planks.
  7. Install LVP with proper 1/4-inch expansion gap at all walls.

Do not skip the seam tape. Untaped seams allow vapor to leak through and condense on the underside of the LVP.

Common Mistakes That Void Warranties

Installing LVP that has an attached underlayment over a separate underlayment is one of the most common warranty-killing mistakes. Most manufacturers prohibit double-stacked underlayment because it exceeds the joint stress tolerance. Read the spec sheet first.

Another mistake: relying on a “moisture-resistant” rigid SPC core to replace a vapor barrier. The core is waterproof, but moisture trapped between the slab and the plank can still grow mold and lift the floor. When You Can Skip the Vapor Barrier

Skip it on second-floor and third-floor installations over conditioned space. Skip it on a properly dry crawlspace with a Class I poly ground cover already in place. Skip it on plywood subfloors over conditioned basements with no moisture history.

If in doubt, install it. The cost is $80-$200 on a typical 1,000 sq ft project. The cost of replacing the entire floor after a moisture failure is 20-50 times that.

Signs Your Existing Floor Is Failing From Moisture

Even installed LVP shows warning signs before catastrophic failure. Edges of planks curling slightly upward, particularly along walls where vapor concentrates, indicate moisture buildup beneath the floor. A musty smell from a basement room, especially after closing windows for several days, is another flag. Visible water staining on the underside of an exposed plank where it meets a transition strip confirms the diagnosis.

Catching these signs at month six is the difference between pulling and re-installing the floor for $1,500 and replacing it entirely for $8,000 after the click joints have weakened irreparably. Inspect every six months in any basement or slab-on-grade installation regardless of how dry the slab tested at install.
