The Three Systems That Work
Walk into a hundred US veterinary clinics and the floor will be either a chemical-resistant epoxy or polyaspartic system, a welded sheet vinyl by Altro or Tarkett, or a rubber surfacing by Mondo or Nora. Each has trade-offs, and the right answer depends on the room. Surgery suites need the easiest decontamination. Kennels need the toughest urine resistance. Reception areas balance hygiene with the look of a normal interior.
Resinous Epoxy and Polyaspartic Systems
For kennel areas and treatment rooms, a 60 to 100 mil epoxy or polyaspartic system is the gold standard. Dur-A-Flex Hybri-Flex, Stonhard Stonclad UR, and Sika Sikafloor PurCem all serve this market with formulations engineered for chemical resistance and bacterial resistance. The system includes integral cove base up the wall by 4 to 6 inches, eliminating the corner where dirt and urine accumulate.
Material plus install runs $9 to $16 per square foot. Expect 15 to 20 year lifespan with proper maintenance. The system tolerates daily quaternary ammonia and weekly bleach disinfection without color shift or surface degradation.
Welded Sheet Vinyl
Altro Whiterock, Tarkett iQ Granit, and Forbo Marmoleum dominate the welded sheet vinyl segment. The product comes in 6 foot rolls, seams are heat-welded with PVC rod to create a continuous hygienic surface, and integral coving runs up the wall. Expect $7 to $14 per square foot installed.
Sheet vinyl is softer underfoot than epoxy, which matters in clinics where staff stand for 10-hour shifts. Slip ratings are excellent when the embossed or particle-infused versions are specified. Altro Aquarius and Tarkett Granit Safe.T offer wet DCOF values well above 0.42.
Rubber and Synthetic Sports Surfacing
Nora, Mondo, and ECOsurfaces all sell rubber roll and sheet flooring used in surgery suites and recovery wards. The dense rubber dampens sound, cushions standing fatigue, and resists chemical attack from common veterinary disinfectants. Pricing lands $8 to $15 per square foot installed. Lifespan exceeds 20 years even under heavy traffic.
Rubber requires specific cleaning chemistry. Bleach and quaternary ammonia at clinic-recommended dilutions are fine, but solvent-based cleaners and high-pH degreasers degrade the rubber. Train staff on the manufacturer’s chemistry list.
Slip Resistance for Wet and Soapy Conditions
Veterinary floors get wet constantly. Patient bathing areas, surgical scrub zones, and post-op cleanup all create soapy or fluid-covered surfaces. ANSI A326.3 minimum wet DCOF is 0.42. For wet barefoot and wet shod animal work zones, target 0.55 or higher. Manufacturers like Altro, Tarkett, and Dur-A-Flex publish independent slip test data.
The texture that delivers safe slip resistance also collects soil and bacteria. Daily auto-scrubbing with a dedicated low-foam neutral detergent keeps the texture clear. Skipping this routine turns a safe floor into a sticky one within weeks.

Cove Base and Sanitary Detailing
Every veterinary floor system should include an integral cove base of 4 to 6 inches up the wall. The radius at the floor-to-wall transition should be smooth and continuous, with no 90-degree angles where dirt collects. For resinous systems, the cove is built up with mortar and finished with the topcoat. For sheet vinyl, the goods are flashed up the wall and capped with a cap strip.
Cost Per Room Type
A typical 8-room clinic of 3,500 square feet runs $35,000 to $70,000 in flooring, depending on system selection and the mix of room types. Kennels and treatment rooms get the toughest spec; reception and exam rooms can use a lighter-duty version of the same product line for cost efficiency.
Plan to close each room for 4 to 7 days during installation. Resinous systems require 24 to 72 hours of cure before traffic. Sheet vinyl requires 24 hours for adhesive set before light traffic.
Maintenance Routine
Daily auto-scrub with a neutral pH detergent and a 3M Scotch-Brite white pad keeps the surface in service spec. Weekly disinfection with quaternary ammonia at the manufacturer-recommended dilution handles bacterial load. Monthly deep cleaning with a soft-bristle brush attachment removes residue from texture valleys.
Avoid daily bleach use. Bleach degrades nearly every flooring polymer over time. Reserve bleach for parvovirus and disease-control situations and rinse thoroughly afterward.
Drains and Floor Slope
Kennels and bathing zones must include floor drains and proper slope. A 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot slope toward a center drain prevents pooling and bacterial growth. Trench drains work well for long runs of kennel space. Point drains with stainless grates suit smaller wash bays. The flooring system must integrate with the drain detailing, with a continuous waterproof membrane wrapping into the drain throat.
Acoustic Performance in Kennels
Barking dogs in concrete-walled kennels create extreme noise levels, often exceeding 100 dB. Rubber and dense sheet vinyl absorb some of the impact and bounce, lowering the noise floor by 10 to 20 dB. For new construction, pair the floor system with acoustic ceiling panels and wall absorbers from Tectum or Acoustic Surfaces for compounded effect. Staff and patients both benefit from quieter facilities.
Selecting the Right System
For new clinic construction, polyaspartic resinous in kennels, welded sheet vinyl in exam and surgery, and rubber in standing-heavy zones is the proven combination. For retrofits over existing tile or VCT, a poured polyaspartic over a primer can renovate without demo. Whichever system you specify, hire an installer with veterinary or healthcare credentials.
