Vinyl underlayment is the thin cushioning layer that sits between your subfloor and a vinyl plank or tile floor. It does quiet work you rarely see: smoothing minor imperfections, softening footsteps, dampening sound, and in some cases adding a barrier against moisture. Get it right and your floor feels solid and warm underfoot for decades. Get it wrong, and you can void your flooring warranty or end up with a hollow, clicking surface that telegraphs every seam.
Because not every vinyl floor needs an extra pad, and some actively forbid one, knowing the rules before you buy is the difference between a quiet, comfortable room and an expensive mistake. Do You Even Need an Underlayment?
The honest answer is: it depends on your flooring product. Many of today’s luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and rigid core SPC floors ship with an attached pad already bonded to the back of each plank. In those cases, the manufacturer almost always tells you to install directly over the subfloor and adding a separate pad can create too much cushion, causing the locking joints to flex and fail.
You generally benefit from a separate underlayment when:
- Your floating click-lock planks do not have an attached pad.
- You want extra sound control, especially in upstairs rooms or condos with acoustic requirements.
- You are installing over a concrete slab and need a moisture barrier.
- The subfloor is hard, cold, or slightly uneven within the manufacturer’s allowed tolerance.

Glue-Down vs. Floating: How Installation Changes the Rules
How your vinyl attaches to the floor dramatically changes whether a pad belongs underneath it. Glue-down vinyl, whether sheet or plank, bonds directly to the subfloor with adhesive. For these products you almost never use a soft underlayment, because the cushion prevents a proper adhesive bond and lets the floor shift. Glue-down floors instead rely on a flat, clean, fully prepped subfloor.
Floating floors, by contrast, snap together at the edges and rest loosely on top of the subfloor without glue or nails. This is the category where a standalone vinyl underlayment makes sense, providing the cushioning and acoustic layer the floating planks lack. If you are unsure which type you have, the product packaging and spec sheet will say “glue-down,” “loose lay,” or “click/floating.”
Common Types of Vinyl Underlayment
Underlayment materials are not interchangeable, and each balances comfort, sound, and moisture differently. The main options you will encounter include:
- Foam (polyethylene/EVA): Lightweight and budget-friendly, offering basic cushioning and modest sound reduction. Good for everyday rooms over wood subfloors.
- Cork: A natural option prized for excellent sound dampening and a firm, stable feel. It resists mold and compression well but typically costs more.
- Felt or recycled fiber: Dense and durable with strong acoustic performance, often chosen for upper floors.
- Rubber: Heavy-duty, highly resilient, and great at blocking sound, though it is the priciest and heaviest to handle.
- Combination pads with attached moisture barrier: Foam or felt bonded to a film layer, popular for concrete slabs.
Match the material to the job. A second-floor bedroom benefits from cork or felt for quiet, while a basement over concrete needs a built-in vapor barrier above all else.
Understanding Sound and Thermal Ratings
Two acoustic numbers come up constantly. The STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating measures how well the assembly blocks airborne sound like voices and televisions. The IIC (Impact Insulation Class) rating measures how well it muffles impact noise like footsteps, which matters most to the neighbor or family member below. Higher numbers are better, and many condo associations set minimum IIC requirements you must meet.
For warmth, look at the R-value, which describes thermal resistance. A higher R-value means a cozier floor and can modestly improve energy comfort over cold slabs. Thicker is not automatically better, though. Most floating vinyl is rated for an underlayment between roughly 1 and 1.5 millimeters; exceed the maximum thickness your manufacturer allows and you risk joint failure.
The Moisture Barrier Question
Concrete is never truly dry. It wicks water vapor up from the ground for the life of the building, and that vapor can damage adhesives, promote mold, and warp flooring. When you install over a slab, you typically need a moisture barrier, either a 6-mil polyethylene sheet or an underlayment with the barrier already built in. Tape the seams as the product directs so the vapor cannot sneak through.
Over a wood subfloor in a dry, above-grade room, a vapor barrier is often unnecessary and can even trap moisture in the subfloor. As always, defer to the flooring manufacturer’s requirements, which spell out whether a barrier is mandatory, optional, or prohibited for your specific product and subfloor.
How to Install Vinyl Underlayment
Installation is straightforward, but precision pays off. Work carefully and ventilate the space, and wear gloves and knee pads for comfort and safety when cutting. A typical sequence looks like this:
- Confirm the subfloor is clean, dry, and flat within the manufacturer’s tolerance, often around 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Fill low spots and sand high ones.
- Let both the underlayment and flooring acclimate in the room for the time the maker specifies, commonly 24 to 48 hours.
- Roll out the first row, barrier side down where applicable, running it perpendicular or parallel as instructed.
- Butt the seams together rather than overlapping, then seal them with the recommended tape so the surface stays flat.
- Trim edges with a sharp utility knife, keeping a small expansion gap at the walls if directed.
- Install your vinyl flooring on top, working in the same direction you laid the pad.
Never overlap underlayment sheets under a floating floor; the bump creates a high spot that stresses the locking joints. If any step in your product’s instructions conflicts with this general guidance, follow the manufacturer.
Budgeting and Avoiding Costly Mistakes
As a rough estimate, basic foam underlayment often runs from less than a dollar to about $0.75 per square foot, while premium cork, felt, and rubber products commonly range from roughly $0.75 to $2 or more per square foot. Treat these as ballpark figures that shift with brand, thickness, and where you buy. Factor in seam tape and any moisture film as well.
The most expensive errors are avoidable. Do not double up padding under planks that already have an attached pad. Do not use soft underlayment beneath glue-down vinyl. Do not skip the moisture barrier on a slab. And do not exceed the thickness limit your floor allows. When the project involves a basement, a questionable slab, or a strict condo acoustic spec, hiring a licensed flooring professional is money well spent, both for the result and for keeping your warranty valid.

Choosing the right vinyl underlayment comes down to three questions: Does my floor already include a pad, is it floating or glued, and what is underneath it?
