  • FloorScore: The most common flooring-specific certification, verifying compliance with strict indoor air quality emission limits.
  • GREENGUARD Gold: A stricter standard developed with sensitive populations (children, the elderly) in mind.
  • CARB2 / TSCA Title VI: Limits on formaldehyde in composite wood products.
  • FSC: Confirms responsible wood sourcing, often paired with low-emission products.

What About Vinyl and Laminate?

Vinyl and laminate are synthetic products that have historically been associated with higher emissions, but the picture has improved. Many reputable manufacturers now produce FloorScore-certified vinyl and low-formaldehyde laminate that meet strict emission standards.

If you want the practicality of vinyl or the affordability of laminate but care about air quality, look specifically for the FloorScore label and no-added-formaldehyde wording. Avoid cheap, uncertified imports, which are the most likely to off-gas. Certified options exist; you just have to seek them out deliberately.

Reducing Emissions After Installation

Even with low-VOC products, a few practical steps minimize your exposure during and after installation. Ventilate thoroughly: open windows and run fans during installation and for several days afterward to clear any initial off-gassing.

If possible, let new flooring acclimate and air out in a ventilated space before installation. Keep the home well-ventilated for the first few weeks, and consider running an air purifier. For the most sensitive individuals, ask installers to unbox materials in a garage or separate space for a day or two before fitting.

Flooring to Be Cautious About
