Water Seeping Through Basement Floor: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

About 60 percent of US homes experience some form of basement moisture and the slab itself is the second most common entry point after the wall-to-floor cove joint. Water seeping through basement floor almost always traces to one of three forces: hydrostatic pressure pushing groundwater up through cracks, capillary wicking through the slab even when no cracks exist, or surface water finding a path along utility penetrations. Identifying which one applies is the difference between a $50 weekend fix and a $15,000 interior drainage system. Diagnosing the Source First

Before you invest in any fix, run the plastic-sheet test. Tape a 2-foot square of clear plastic to the slab in the wettest area, sealing all four edges with duct tape. Wait 48 hours, then peel it back:

  • Moisture on the slab side (under the plastic): water is coming up through the slab. Hydrostatic pressure or capillary wicking.
  • Moisture on the room side (top of plastic): humid basement air is condensing on the cool slab. A dehumidifier solves it.

Cracks in the Slab

Interior French Drain Systems

Vapor Barriers Under New Slab Construction

If you are pouring a new basement slab as part of a finish-out or addition, install a 15-mil polyethylene vapor barrier (Stego Wrap or W.R. Meadows Perminator) under the slab.
