Every floor in your home sits on top of a subfloor, yet most homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong. Squeaky floors, uneven surfaces, bouncy spots, and moisture problems almost always trace back to subfloor issues. Understanding what a subfloor is, what it does, and how to identify problems with it is essential knowledge before installing any new flooring.

What a Subfloor Is and What It Does

A subfloor is the structural layer of flooring attached directly to the floor joists in your home. It is the first layer in a floor system, sitting on top of the framing and beneath everything else. The subfloor serves two primary functions: it provides a flat, stable surface for finished flooring, and it adds structural rigidity to the floor system by tying the joists together.

Think of the subfloor as the foundation of your floor. Just as a house needs a solid foundation to stand properly, your finished flooring needs a solid subfloor to look good and last. A warped, damaged, or uneven subfloor will telegraph problems through whatever you install on top of it, whether that is hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, or carpet.

The Three Layers of a Floor System

Understanding the difference between a subfloor, underlayment, and finished flooring prevents confusion when planning a renovation or troubleshooting a problem.

Subfloor (Bottom Layer)

The structural layer nailed or screwed directly to floor joists. It carries the load of everything above it, including people, furniture, and appliances. Subfloor materials include plywood, OSB (oriented strand board), concrete, and in older homes, diagonal planks of solid wood.

Underlayment (Middle Layer)

An optional intermediate layer placed on top of the subfloor and beneath the finished flooring. Underlayment smooths minor imperfections, adds sound dampening, provides moisture protection, and improves comfort underfoot. Common underlayment materials include foam, cork, felt, plywood, and cement board. Not all flooring installations require separate underlayment, as some products come with it attached.

Finished Flooring (Top Layer)

The visible surface you walk on. This is your hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, carpet, or any other flooring material. The finished floor relies on everything beneath it for support and stability.

Common Subfloor Materials

Plywood

Plywood is the preferred subfloor material for most residential construction. It consists of multiple thin layers of wood veneer glued together with alternating grain directions, which creates dimensional stability and resistance to warping. Standard subfloor plywood is 3/4 inch thick, though 5/8 inch is also used in some applications.

Tongue-and-groove plywood (T&G) is the most common subfloor panel because the interlocking edges create a tight, stable connection between sheets. CDX plywood (exposure-rated) handles some moisture exposure during construction but is not waterproof. Plywood subfloors perform well under all flooring types and are relatively easy to repair or patch.

OSB (Oriented Strand Board)

OSB has largely replaced plywood as the most widely installed subfloor material in new construction because it costs less. OSB is made from compressed wood strands bonded with resin. It provides good structural strength and stiffness at a lower price point than plywood.

The main drawback of OSB is its vulnerability to moisture. Once OSB absorbs water, it swells at the edges and is slow to dry. The swollen edges create visible ridges that telegraph through thin flooring materials like vinyl and laminate. For this reason, plywood remains the better choice in moisture-prone areas or when the subfloor may be exposed to water during construction.

Concrete

In homes with slab-on-grade construction, basements, and ground-level additions, the subfloor is a concrete slab. Concrete subfloors are strong, rigid, and durable, but they present unique challenges including moisture vapor transmission, alkalinity, and unevenness.

Most flooring types can be installed over concrete with proper preparation. Tile and epoxy adhere directly to concrete. Vinyl, laminate, and engineered wood float over concrete with a moisture barrier underlayment. Solid hardwood should not be glued directly to concrete on or below grade without a plywood sleeper system.

Solid Wood Planks (Older Homes)

Homes built before the 1950s often have subfloors made from 1×6 or 1×8 solid wood planks laid diagonally across the joists. These plank subfloors are structurally sound but often have gaps between boards, uneven surfaces, and squeaky spots. They can serve as a subfloor for most modern flooring installations with proper preparation, including filling gaps, screwing down loose boards, and adding underlayment where needed.

Common Subfloor Problems

Moisture Damage

Moisture is the number one enemy of wood subfloors. Plumbing leaks, flooding, high humidity, and inadequate ventilation in crawlspaces can saturate subfloor panels, causing swelling, warping, delamination, and eventually rot. Signs of moisture damage include soft or spongy spots when you walk, visible staining or discoloration, musty odors, and mold growth on the underside of panels.

Concrete subfloors transmit moisture vapor from the ground, which can damage flooring installed above. This is especially common in basements and slab-on-grade construction. Moisture barriers and proper testing before installation are essential for waterproof flooring considerations.

Squeaking

Squeaky floors are almost always a subfloor issue. They occur when subfloor panels rub against nails that have worked loose from the joists below. Temperature and humidity changes cause wood to expand and contract, gradually loosening the original nails. The fix is usually straightforward: drive screws through the subfloor into the joists to pull the panels tight and eliminate movement.

Unevenness

An uneven subfloor creates problems for every flooring type. Rigid flooring like tile will crack over high spots and hollow out over low spots. Floating floors like laminate and LVP will feel bouncy or develop gaps over dips. Even carpet shows bumps and ridges from a severely uneven subfloor.

Unevenness can result from warped panels, swollen edges (especially on OSB), improperly spaced joists, settling, or structural issues. Most flooring manufacturers require the subfloor to be flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span. Anything beyond that needs correction before installation.

Structural Weakness

A subfloor that feels bouncy, flexes when you walk, or has visible sagging may have structural problems. This could indicate undersized joists, joists spaced too far apart, water damage that has weakened the subfloor panels, or termite damage to the framing. Structural issues require professional assessment and repair before any new flooring goes down.

How to Test Your Subfloor

Moisture Testing

For wood subfloors, use a pin-type moisture meter to check moisture content. Most flooring manufacturers require wood subfloor moisture content below 12 percent, and the difference between the subfloor and the flooring material should be no more than 2 to 4 percentage points.

For concrete subfloors, the calcium chloride test measures moisture vapor emission rate (MVER). Place a sealed container of calcium chloride on the slab for 60 to 72 hours, then weigh it. Most flooring products require an MVER below 3 to 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours. The relative humidity test (ASTM F2170) uses in-situ probes to measure humidity within the concrete and is considered more accurate.

Flatness Testing

Lay a straight 8-foot or 10-foot straightedge or level on the subfloor in multiple directions. Slide a measuring device under any gaps. Note any areas where the gap exceeds 3/16 inch. Mark high spots and low spots for correction.

Structural Testing

Walk the entire subfloor and note any areas that feel soft, bouncy, or spongy. Mark squeaky spots. Look for visible damage, staining, or evidence of past water exposure. If you have access to the underside (from a basement or crawlspace), inspect joists for damage, proper spacing, and adequate support.

Subfloor Repair Methods

Fixing Squeaks

Drive 2-1/2 inch or 3-inch wood screws through the subfloor into the joists every 6 to 8 inches along the squeaky area. Screws hold better than nails and pull the subfloor tight to the joist. If you cannot access the subfloor from above, have someone drive shims or construction adhesive between the joist and subfloor from below.

Leveling an Uneven Subfloor

Sand or plane down high spots on wood subfloors. Fill low spots with self-leveling compound rated for the subfloor material. For concrete subfloors, apply self-leveling underlayment over the entire surface or in targeted areas. Severely uneven subfloors may need a new layer of 1/4-inch plywood installed over the existing surface.

Replacing Damaged Sections

Cut out water-damaged or rotted subfloor sections using a circular saw set to the exact thickness of the subfloor. Cut along the center of joists so the replacement piece has solid bearing on each side. Install new plywood or OSB of the same thickness, screwing it firmly to the joists. Add blocking between joists if needed to support panel edges.

Adding a Moisture Barrier

For concrete subfloors, apply a moisture barrier before installing flooring. Options include 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, liquid-applied moisture barriers, and epoxy moisture sealers. The right product depends on the moisture level and the flooring being installed. Some underlayment products combine cushioning with built-in moisture barriers.

Subfloor Requirements by Flooring Type

Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor (plywood or OSB) for nail-down installation. Engineered wood can go over wood or concrete subfloors. Laminate and luxury vinyl float over any subfloor type with appropriate underlayment. Tile requires a rigid, stable subfloor, typically with cement board installed over plywood. Carpet is the most forgiving and can handle minor subfloor imperfections that would be visible through harder flooring materials.

Final Thoughts

Your subfloor is the hidden layer that determines whether your finished floor looks great and lasts or develops problems within the first few years. Before any flooring installation, inspect your subfloor for moisture, flatness, and structural integrity. Fix problems now rather than covering them up with new flooring.
