Solid surface countertops have been a kitchen and bathroom staple since DuPont introduced the material in 1967. Corian countertops are the original and still the best-known brand of solid surface, made from a blend of acrylic polymer and natural minerals. They occupy a middle ground between budget laminate and premium stone, offering seamless appearance, repairability, and a warm, matte feel that natural stone cannot match. But they also have limitations that every buyer should understand before committing to a $3,000 to $7,000 kitchen installation.
How Corian Is Made
Corian consists of approximately one-third acrylic resin and two-thirds natural minerals, primarily alumina trihydrate derived from bauxite ore. The mixture is poured into molds, heated, and cured into solid sheets typically 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch thick. Unlike granite or quartz, the color and pattern run completely through the material, which is why scratches and minor damage can be sanded out.
DuPont (now owned by Dupont de Nemours) offers over 100 colors and patterns, ranging from solid whites and neutrals to designs that mimic granite, concrete, and marble. The material is fabricated by certified Corian fabricators who use specialized tools to cut, shape, and join panels with chemically bonded seams that become virtually invisible.
Advantages of Corian Countertops
The biggest selling point of Corian is its seamless appearance. Fabricators join sections with a color-matched adhesive that, once sanded, becomes nearly invisible. This means no grout lines, no visible seams at corners, and the ability to integrate sinks as a single piece with the countertop, called an integral sink. Water flows directly into the basin with no seam to catch grime.

Corian is not as hard as quartz or granite. It scores around 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale versus 7 for quartz and 6 to 7 for granite. This means it scratches more easily, especially in darker colors where marks are more visible. Cutting directly on a Corian surface will leave knife marks within days.
Heat resistance is moderate. Corian can withstand temperatures up to about 212 degrees Fahrenheit (boiling water temperature) for brief contact, but a hot pan pulled directly from a 400-degree oven will scorch the surface. Trivets and hot pads are mandatory. This is a notable disadvantage compared to granite, which handles hot cookware without concern.
Weight-bearing capacity is lower than stone. Corian countertops at 1/2-inch thickness require support every 18 to 24 inches on overhangs and cannot span long distances without a plywood substrate underneath. Standard thickness for kitchen installations is 1/2 inch with a built-up edge profile to create the appearance of a thicker slab.
Corian Countertop Cost
Installed pricing for Corian countertops ranges from $40 to $100 per square foot, depending on color, edge profile, and project complexity. Solid colors at the entry level run $40 to $55 per square foot. Mid-range patterns and colors cost $55 to $75. Premium designs that mimic natural stone run $75 to $100.
An average kitchen with 40 square feet of countertop space costs $2,000 to $4,500 installed with a standard edge profile and drop-in sink cutout. Adding an integrated Corian sink runs $300 to $600 depending on the bowl configuration. Edge profile upgrades from standard straight to ogee or bullnose add $10 to $20 per linear foot.

Maintenance and Daily Care
Daily cleaning requires nothing more than warm water and a soft cloth or sponge. For stuck-on residue, a non-abrasive household cleaner like diluted dish soap works well. Avoid cleaners containing acetone, paint thinner, or strong solvents, as these can damage the surface finish.
Minor scratches on matte-finish Corian buff out easily with a Scotch-Brite pad using circular motions. For deeper scratches, start with 400-grit sandpaper and work up through 600 and 800-grit until the mark disappears, then restore the sheen with the Scotch-Brite pad. Semi-gloss and high-gloss finishes require more careful sanding technique to maintain the even sheen.
Stains from coffee, wine, or food coloring usually lift with a paste of baking soda and water left on the spot for several hours. Stubborn stains can be sanded out. This repairability is a significant advantage over quartz and granite, where deep stains or chips often require professional repair or slab replacement.
