Window Air Conditioner Not Blowing Cold Air But Running: A Diagnostic Walkthrough

When your window air conditioner not blowing cold air but running shows up on the hottest afternoon of July, the problem is rarely a dead unit. Nine times out of ten it is a dirty filter, an iced coil, or a tired capacitor that costs $14 to replace. Before you call a tech or shop for a new LG or Frigidaire, walk through these checks in order. Most fixes take under an hour and require nothing more exotic than a screwdriver, a fin comb, and a multimeter.

Confirm the Thermostat and Mode Settings First

Sounds obvious, but the most common false alarm is a unit accidentally bumped into Fan Only mode. The compressor will not engage and you get room-temperature airflow even though the unit hums normally. On a GE AHY10LZ, Fan Only is one tap away from Cool on the front panel. Set the thermostat at least 5 degrees below the room temperature so the compressor cycles on within 90 seconds.

Check and Clean the Air Filter

Slide out the filter behind the front grille. If it looks gray or felted with dust, that is your problem. A clogged filter starves the evaporator coil of airflow, which causes the coil to freeze, which blocks the remaining airflow entirely. Rinse the foam or mesh filter under warm water with a drop of Dawn, squeeze dry, and reinstall. Replace pleated filters every 30 to 60 days during heavy use. A $4 filter saves a $400 service call.

Look for Ice on the Evaporator Coil

Pull the front grille and look at the coil behind the filter. If you see frost or solid ice, the unit is not broken, it is frozen. Causes include:

  • Dirty filter or blocked airflow.
  • Outdoor temperature below 60 degrees F when running on Cool.
  • Low refrigerant from a slow leak.
  • Failing blower fan motor moving less than rated CFM.

Turn the unit to Fan Only for two to four hours to thaw fully. Place a towel under the front to catch melt water. Once thawed, run on Cool and watch for re-freezing within the first 30 minutes.

Wash the Condenser Coil Outside

The back half of the unit pulls heat out of your home and dumps it outside. Cottonwood seeds, lawn clipping debris, and bug nests choke the outer fins. Unplug the unit, slide it out of the window (or open the rear shroud), and spray the fins gently with a garden hose at standard pressure, working from inside out. Use a $9 fin comb from Supco to straighten any bent fins. A clean condenser drops head pressure 20 to 30 psi and restores cooling capacity immediately.

Test the Run Capacitor

If the unit hums but the compressor never starts, or starts and stops within seconds, the run capacitor is the most likely culprit. Unplug the unit, wait five minutes, then unscrew the control panel and locate the oval or round capacitor wired to the compressor. A 35/5 uF dual capacitor is typical on a 12,000 BTU unit. Discharge it across a 20K ohm resistor for safety, then test with a multimeter on the capacitance setting. Anything more than 6 percent below the rated value means replace. Listen for the Compressor Engaging

Stand next to the unit with the temperature set 10 degrees below room. Within 90 seconds you should hear a deeper hum and a slight click as the compressor kicks in. No click, no engagement, and you have either a failed start relay, a seized compressor, or a bad capacitor. Refrigerant Leaks Are Rare But Real

Window units are factory-sealed and not field-serviceable for refrigerant. If the coil never gets cold even with clean filters, clean condenser, and a verified-good capacitor, suspect a slow leak. You will not be able to recharge it legally without EPA Section 608 certification, and most repair shops will not touch a sealed window unit. Replace it. Sealed-system leaks on a five-year-old unit are a sign the rest of the components are likely past their useful life anyway.

Check Airflow at the Vent

Hold a piece of tissue paper at the vent. It should snap horizontal and stay there. Weak airflow with a clean filter points to a failing blower wheel or motor. Blower wheels collect a film of dust and lose efficiency over the years. Pull the front housing, slide the chassis halfway out, and inspect. A new universal blower wheel costs around $30 and swaps in 45 minutes with a 7/16 inch socket and a set of needle-nose pliers.

When to Stop Troubleshooting

If you have cleaned filters and coils, verified the capacitor, confirmed the compressor engages, and the unit still blows lukewarm, the sealed system is failing. For any window AC older than 8 years or under 12,000 BTU, replacement is cheaper than diagnosis. This 30-minute annual ritual extends the working life from a typical 7 to 10 years out to 14 or more.
