Every electrical connection in your home depends on a secure splice, and wire caps are the standard method for joining wires safely. Also called wire nuts or twist-on connectors, these small plastic-and-metal devices create insulated connections that meet National Electrical Code requirements. Proper Installation Technique

Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire using a wire stripper set to the correct gauge. Hold the bare ends parallel and even — staggered ends create weak connections. Grip the wires firmly with one hand and twist the cap clockwise with the other until it is snug and no bare copper is visible below the cap.

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker and verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester
  2. Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire end
  3. Hold stripped ends together, aligned evenly

Common Wire Cap Mistakes

Stripping too much insulation ranks as the most dangerous error. If bare copper extends below the wire cap, it can contact other wires or the metal junction box. Strip exactly 3/4 inch — no more. Using an undersized cap is equally risky. The spring cannot grip wires that are too large, resulting in a loose connection that generates heat under load.

Never reuse wire caps. The metal spring deforms slightly with each use and loses gripping force. At $3-$5 for a bag of 50, there is no reason to risk a loose connection to save a few cents. Crimp connectors offer another option for permanent splices.
