Wood Flooring Underlay: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

Nobody sees the layer beneath the floor, yet it controls half of what you feel and hear. Wood flooring underlay provides cushioning, moisture protection, sound dampening, and a flat base that makes the planks above it look and perform at their best. Pick the wrong underlay and the floor feels hollow, creaks under every step, or fails prematurely as moisture migrates up from below. Pick the right one and the install will outlive most appliances in the house.

What Underlay Actually Does

Underlay serves four jobs simultaneously. It levels minor subfloor variations up to about 3mm, it cushions the floor against impact, it reduces sound transmission both within the room and to the floor below, and in most installations it blocks moisture from migrating into the wood.

Not every underlay does all four well. Cheap 1mm foam cushions slightly but does almost nothing for sound. Dense cork excels at sound but costs more. Combination products with integrated vapor barriers handle moisture but can trap it in the wrong installations. Matching the product to the floor type and subfloor is the real decision.

Foam Underlay

Standard polyethylene foam is the cheapest and most common option. It comes in 2mm and 3mm thicknesses, typically in 10-foot-wide rolls that cover 100 square feet each. Prices run 20 to 45 cents per square foot at home centers.

Foam works for floating engineered hardwood and laminate over a flat plywood or OSB subfloor. It does very little for sound dampening, so avoid it for upstairs rooms where footfall noise matters. Foam with an attached vapor barrier (often called combination underlay) adds a plastic film that blocks moisture from concrete — useful for slab-on-grade and basement installs.

Cork Underlay

Cork is the premium performer. Natural cork sheets or rolls in 3mm, 6mm, or 12mm thicknesses provide superior sound absorption, natural thermal insulation, and excellent cushioning. A 3mm cork underlay adds roughly 20 decibels of sound reduction compared to foam.

The downside is cost and moisture sensitivity. Pure cork runs $1 to $2 per square foot. On concrete subfloors, pair cork with a separate vapor barrier because cork itself is not moisture-proof. For apartment renovations and upstairs bedrooms, cork is almost always worth the premium — neighbors and sleep quality both benefit.

Felt Underlay

Recycled felt underlay has gained popularity for engineered hardwood and nail-down solid hardwood. Typically 3mm thick and made from compressed recycled fibers, felt provides good sound reduction, moderate cushioning, and excellent slip resistance that keeps planks in place during installation.

Felt works well for nail-down solid hardwood over plywood because it does not compress as much as foam over time. Brands like QuietWalk and Floor Muffler are widely available at $0.50 to $1 per square foot. Some felt products include an attached vapor barrier for use over concrete.

Rubber Underlay

Dense rubber underlay is the choice for serious sound attenuation and is specified by many condo associations. It runs 5mm to 10mm thick and costs $1.50 to $3 per square foot. Performance is excellent — sound transmission class (STC) and impact isolation class (IIC) ratings climb significantly with rubber compared to foam.

Rubber does not breathe, so it must be used with engineered products and proper vapor management. Solid hardwood installers generally avoid rubber because it can trap moisture against the wood.

Matching Underlay to Floor Type

  • Floating engineered hardwood: 3mm foam, felt, or cork. Use a vapor barrier on concrete.
  • Floating laminate: 3mm foam with vapor barrier or combination underlay. Cork for quieter results.
  • Nail-down solid hardwood: 15-pound felt paper or a rosin-paper moisture barrier over plywood. No thick foam.
  • Glue-down engineered: no underlay — the adhesive bonds the floor directly to the subfloor.
  • Luxury vinyl plank (floating): 1mm IXPE or attached underlay only. Thicker foam can damage the click joints.

Vapor Barriers and Moisture Control

Wood and moisture are lifelong enemies. Any install over concrete needs a proper vapor barrier — a 6-mil polyethylene sheet, an attached plastic layer in a combination underlay, or a liquid moisture-suppressant primer applied to the slab before installation.

Test the concrete moisture first. A calcium chloride test (ASTM F1869) should read below 3 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours. Higher readings require a premium moisture barrier or a different flooring choice altogether. Skipping this step is the leading cause of failed wood floor installations over slabs.

Sound Ratings Explained

Two ratings matter for multi-story homes and condos. STC (sound transmission class) measures how well the floor-ceiling assembly blocks airborne sound like voices and TV. IIC (impact isolation class) measures how well it blocks impact sound like footsteps and dropped objects.

Most condo associations require STC 50 and IIC 55 or better. Cheap foam underlay adds a couple of points at most. Cork underlay adds 8 to 15 points. Rubber underlay can add 15 to 25 points. Check your association rules before buying — non-compliant floors may need to be torn out.

Installation Tips

Roll out underlay perpendicular to the planned floor direction. Butt seams tightly and tape them with the manufacturer’s recommended tape — usually a seam tape included with the product. Overlap vapor barrier edges by 6 inches and tape them with moisture-resistant tape.

Never double up underlay. Two layers of 3mm foam create a spongy surface that flexes click joints and voids warranties. Always use a single manufacturer-approved underlay at the correct thickness. Plan the underlay roll direction so seams do not align with plank seams above.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using thick foam under LVP — damages click joints and voids warranty
  • Skipping vapor barrier on concrete — wood cups, buckles, or molds within a year
  • Overlapping underlay at seams — creates visible ridges through the finished floor
  • Using cork without testing concrete moisture — cork itself wicks moisture
  • Choosing quality by thickness alone — denser 3mm often outperforms cheap 5mm

For a typical 500 square-foot living room, expect the following underlay costs:

  • Basic foam: $100 to $200
  • Combination foam with vapor barrier: $150 to $300
  • Felt underlay: $250 to $500
  • Cork underlay: $500 to $1,000
  • Rubber underlay: $750 to $1,500

The price gap between foam and cork is $400 on a 500-square-foot room. Spread across 20 years of ownership, that is $20 per year for significantly quieter, warmer, and more cushioned flooring. Almost always worth it for main living areas and upstairs rooms.

Quality wood flooring underlay is not where you save money. Match the product to your floor type, subfloor, and sound goals. Pair it with proper moisture testing and vapor protection on concrete.
