If you are remodeling a staircase or planning an addition with new stairs, the width is dictated by code, function, and how the stair fits into the home. Average stair width in a US single-family home is 36 to 44 inches measured between the inside faces of the wall or stringer, with 36 inches being the absolute minimum allowed under the International Residential Code (IRC R311.7.1). Going wider is common in newer construction and high-end remodels, while older homes often have stairs that fall below code and require modification when permitted work is done.
Code Minimum: 36 Inches
IRC requires residential stairs to be at least 36 inches wide above the handrail height. Below the handrail, where the rail itself protrudes 4-1/2 inches into the path, the clear width can drop to 31-1/2 inches with a single handrail or 27 inches with handrails on both sides. These are minimums, not recommendations. They satisfy the code official but feel cramped, especially when carrying laundry baskets or moving furniture.
Older homes built before the 1990s often have stairs that are 30 to 34 inches wide. These are grandfathered in for as long as you do not do major renovation work, but if you pull a permit to rebuild the stair, current code applies and you have to widen it.
Comfortable Residential Stair Width
Most builders today specify 42 to 44 inches as the design width for new construction stairs. This gives roughly 39 to 41 inches of clear walking width after the handrail and trim, which is enough for one person to comfortably ascend while another descends sideways. It also accommodates a 30 to 36 inch wide piece of furniture (most upholstered chairs, mattresses up to a queen on edge) being carried up or down.
Custom homes and luxury new builds often go to 48 inches or wider. A 48-inch stair feels grand, accommodates two people walking abreast, and looks proportionate in a two-story foyer. The downside is that it consumes more floor area at both the top and bottom landings.
Spiral and Compact Stairs
Spiral stairs have their own rules. IRC R311.7.10.1 allows a minimum 26-inch clear width on each side of the center column. Spiral stairs are permitted as the only means of egress from a space up to 400 sq ft, which is why they are common in attic conversions and tight spaces but not as a primary stair to bedrooms.
Alternating tread devices and ship’s ladders have even tighter rules and can only serve very small loft spaces. Do not plan a spiral or alternating tread as your primary stair without checking your local amendments.
Commercial and Multifamily Width
Commercial buildings under the International Building Code (IBC) require minimum 44 inches for stairs serving up to 50 occupants, and wider for larger occupant loads. Apartment building common stairs are typically 44 to 48 inches. Egress stairs in office buildings, schools, and hospitals can be 60 inches or more depending on occupancy.
This is why apartment hallway stairs feel different from house stairs, you are walking through a 44-inch corridor designed for two-way traffic, not the 36 to 42 inch single-file path of a house.
Handrail Requirements at Width
One handrail is required on stairs with four or more risers. Two handrails are required when the stair is wider than 44 inches. The handrail itself must be 1-1/4 to 2 inches in graspable diameter, mounted 34 to 38 inches above the nose of the tread, and continuous along the full run with returns to the wall at top and bottom.
The 4-1/2 inch maximum projection rule means a beefy 2×2 wood rail with mounting brackets cannot eat more than 4-1/2 inches of horizontal stair width. Modern slim metal rails projecting 1-1/2 to 2 inches save a lot of effective walking space.
Width and Headroom Interaction
Wider stairs make headroom easier to achieve. Code requires 6 feet 8 inches of clear headroom measured from the nose of each tread to the ceiling above. On a narrow stair tucked under a sloped ceiling or a low soffit, the sloped headroom envelope can clip the upper end of the stair. Going from 36 to 42 inches wide can sometimes shift the stair location enough to clear the soffit without changing tread count.
Existing Stair Modifications
If you are widening an existing stair from 32 to 36 inches, the work is non-trivial. You typically have to remove the wall on at least one side, frame a new rough opening, replace the stringers, and possibly resize the floor opening at the top. A simple widening project can run $4,000 to $8,000 with finishes. If the wall being moved is load-bearing, double the cost for a structural beam.
For a basement stair, widening the framed opening is often constrained by the joists running parallel to the stair. A header replacement to span a wider opening is engineering work that needs an LVL beam and possibly a permit-required structural drawing.
Tread Depth and Riser Height
Width is only one of three stair dimensions that matter. Tread depth (the horizontal walking surface) must be at least 10 inches measured from nose to nose. Riser height (vertical step height) must be 7-3/4 inches maximum and 4 inches minimum, with no more than 3/8 inch variation between any two risers in the run. A staircase that meets average stair width minimums but has 8-1/4 inch risers will fail inspection.
Practical Recommendations
For new construction, specify 42 inches between walls. This gives you 39 inches of clear walking width with a 1-1/2 inch rail projection on one side, 36 inches if you add a second rail. Furniture moves easily and the stair feels generous without consuming excessive floor area at the landings. For a remodel of a tight existing stair, 36 inches is the realistic target unless you have budget for major framing work.
