Walk into any commercial wood-flooring job in North America and odds are decent the installer is troweling a tan paste labeled Bostik. Bostik flooring adhesive earned that mind share by solving two problems most adhesives could not handle at the same time: bonding solid hardwood to concrete and acting as a moisture barrier in the same pass. If you are spec’ing adhesive for a glue-down install, knowing the product line keeps you from buying the wrong bucket.
Why Installers Stay Loyal
Bostik’s MS polymer chemistry, sold under the Best brand since the early 2000s, set the template for modern wood adhesives. It cures elastomeric, meaning the cured film stretches when the wood moves seasonally. That elasticity is the difference between a quiet floor and one that squeaks every January when humidity drops.
The other selling point is sound-attenuation and moisture protection built into a single trowel pass. Job sites that used to require a separate underlayment or moisture membrane can hit the same spec by upping the trowel size and using Bostik Ultra-Set SingleStep2.
The Lineup, Explained
Bostik sells five products most homeowners and pros encounter. Best is the original urethane wood adhesive, suited for 3/4 inch solid and engineered hardwood up to 7 inches wide. GreenForce is the lower-cost MS polymer version, ideal for engineered wood and parquet under 5 inches wide.
Ultra-Set SingleStep2 is the premium pick: it bonds, attenuates sound, and blocks moisture up to 95 percent relative humidity (ASTM F2170) and 12 lbs MVER (ASTM F1869) in one application. Pro-Cure is the pressure-sensitive adhesive for LVT and luxury vinyl plank installs. AXIOS Ply 1100 covers wood-to-concrete jobs where the slab pushes past 95 percent RH.
Coverage and Trowel Specs
Coverage swings dramatically with trowel size. A 4 gallon pail of Bostik Best with the recommended 3/16 by 1/4 inch V-notch trowel covers about 60 square feet. Swap to a 1/4 by 1/4 by 1/4 inch square notch for wider planks and coverage drops to roughly 50 square feet per pail. Ultra-Set SingleStep2 in the 4 gallon pail covers 35 to 60 square feet depending on whether you spec the standard or the heavy moisture-control trowel.
Cost runs $90 to $140 per 4 gallon pail at distributors like Lumber Liquidators Pro, Floor & Decor, and DIY flooring supply sites. That works out to roughly $1.75 to $3 per square foot in adhesive alone for a 5 inch engineered plank install.
Working Time and Cure
Bostik Best has an open time of 60 to 75 minutes at 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 percent relative humidity. Ultra-Set SingleStep2 is faster at 30 to 45 minutes, which is why installers troweling that product almost always work in smaller sections.
Walk-on cure runs 8 to 12 hours. Full cure for sanding or recoating is 24 to 48 hours. Push past these windows in cold or humid conditions and you can lift planks for re-set, which is one of Bostik’s quiet advantages over Titebond and other competitors.
Trowel Tips From the Field
Hold the trowel at 45 degrees. Anything flatter and you leave too much adhesive, which squeezes up between planks. Anything steeper and you starve the bond. Tape a fresh strip of blue tape across each plank’s face before setting it, so you can wipe stray adhesive off the laminate or oil finish without staining.
For wide-plank engineered, run a second pass over the first ridges with the trowel pointed the opposite direction. That cross-hatching gives the urethane somewhere to flow when you weight the plank, instead of telegraphing trowel ridges through a thin veneer.
Subfloor Prep You Cannot Skip
Pass the ASTM F1869 calcium chloride test or F2170 relative humidity probe before opening a pail. Bostik publishes the maximum slab MVER and RH for each product on their TDS. Use AXIOS Ply 1100 if the slab tests at 18 lbs MVER or 99 percent RH, otherwise the warranty is gone.
Grind off any cure-and-seal compounds with a 7 inch diamond cup. Self-leveler should reach pH 7 to 11 before troweling, and the slab itself must read above 65 degrees Fahrenheit for 48 hours pre-install.
Clean Up Without Wrecking the Floor
Fresh urethane wipes off finished wood with mineral spirits or Bostik’s own Ultimate Adhesive Remover. Cured adhesive is a nightmare. Once it sets, a citrus solvent and plastic scraper are your best shot, and even then you risk dulling the finish. Wipe stray drips every 15 minutes during install.
Storage and Shelf Life
Sealed pails store for 12 months from manufacture in cool, dry conditions between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Once a pail is opened, the urethane begins reacting with atmospheric humidity and you have roughly 14 to 30 days to use the remainder. Re-sealing the lid tightly and storing pail inverted helps slow skinning.
Buy only the volume you can install within the working window. A common mistake on small jobs is buying a full 4 gallon pail for a 40 square foot closet install, then discovering the leftover hardened by the next project. Bostik also sells 16 ounce tubes of Best for small repairs at roughly $25 each, which suits patch jobs.
Comparing Bostik to Mapei and Sika
Bostik’s main competitors in glue-down wood and LVT are Mapei Ultrabond ECO 985 and Sika SikaBond T55. All three deliver similar moisture and bond performance on paper, but field installers note that Bostik’s working time is the most forgiving in cooler basement conditions below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, where Mapei tends to thicken faster.
Sika SikaBond T55 wins on full-spread coverage rate per pail and is slightly cheaper at distribution, but its lower elasticity makes it less forgiving on wide-plank solid hardwood that moves seasonally. For most residential installs, the choice between brands comes down to dealer availability and price within your local distributor network rather than meaningful performance differences.
Where Bostik Fits Your Project
If you are gluing engineered hardwood to a basement slab, Ultra-Set SingleStep2 is the safest spec. For 3/4 inch solid oak over plywood, Best is the cheaper and equally proven choice. Spec Pro-Cure under LVT and never substitute one product for another at the trowel. Bostik flooring adhesive lasts as long as the wood above it, which on a glue-down engineered job means 25 years plus, provided you respected the moisture limits printed on the lid.
