Wattage is a terrible way to measure bulb brightness, and most people still shop for “100-watt equivalent” bulbs without realizing the equivalent number is a marketing approximation. The actual specification that matters is lumens, and the brightest white light bulb options on the shelves today produce 2,000 to 5,000 lumens out of a single screw-in base — far more than a traditional incandescent ever could. Picking the right one depends on the room, the fixture rating, and how much glare you can tolerate. Buy wrong and you end up squinting under your own kitchen lights.

Lumens vs. Watts vs. Kelvin

Three numbers matter when shopping for a bright bulb:

  • Lumens — the actual amount of light produced. More is brighter.
  • Kelvin — the color temperature. Lower numbers (2700K) are warm yellow; higher numbers (5000K to 6500K) are cool blue-white.

When Bright Is Too Bright
