Click-Lock vs Glue-Down

Choose click-lock when you want easier installation, the ability to replace damaged planks, or the option to remove the floor later. Choose glue-down for maximum stability, reduced noise, or when installing over radiant heat where the adhesive helps conduct warmth.

Click-Lock vs Loose Lay

Loose-lay vinyl planks have a friction-grip backing and simply rest on the subfloor without clicking together or gluing down. They’re the easiest to install and remove but don’t have the structural rigidity of a clicked-together floating floor.

Choose click-lock for a permanent-feeling floor that stays tight under heavy use. Choose loose lay for temporary installations, rentals, or spaces where you need maximum flexibility.

Click-Lock vs Nail-Down

Nail-down installation is the traditional method for solid hardwood. Each board is face-nailed or blind-nailed through the tongue into the wood subfloor. It’s the most secure installation method but requires a wood subfloor (not concrete) and significant skill.

Click-lock is faster, works over any flat subfloor including concrete, and doesn’t require specialized nailing tools. Nail-down is better for solid hardwood and when you want a floor with zero flex or movement.

How to Install Click Together Flooring

Tools You’ll Need

  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Utility knife (for vinyl) or miter saw/circular saw (for laminate and engineered wood)
  • Tapping block and pull bar
  • Spacers (1/4 inch)
  • Speed square for marking cuts
  • Rubber mallet

Step-by-Step Overview

  1. Acclimate the flooring: Leave the boxes in the room for 24 to 48 hours at the room’s normal temperature and humidity. This is essential for laminate and engineered wood; less critical for vinyl but still recommended.
  2. Prepare the subfloor: Clean, dry, and level. Fill low spots, grind high spots, remove debris.
  3. Install underlayment: Roll out the underlayment, taping seams with the recommended tape. If the product has attached underlayment, skip this step but add a vapor barrier on concrete subfloors.
  4. Plan your layout: Measure the room width and calculate the width of the last row. If it will be less than 2 inches wide, trim the first row so the last row is at least 2 to 3 inches. Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between adjacent rows (12 inches is better).
  5. Install the first row: Place spacers against the starting wall. Lay the first row with the tongue side facing the wall (or groove side, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions). Click end joints together.
  6. Continue row by row: Angle the long side of each new row into the previous row’s groove and press flat. Tap short ends together with a tapping block. Use a pull bar for the last plank in each row where there isn’t room to swing a mallet.
  7. Cut the last row: Measure the gap, subtract the expansion space, and rip planks to width. A table saw or circular saw with a guide works best for rip cuts.
  8. Install transitions and trim: Add transition strips at doorways and quarter round or shoe molding around the perimeter to cover the expansion gap.

Common Problems With Click Together Flooring

Gaps Between Planks

Gaps usually mean the click joint didn’t fully engage during installation, or the subfloor isn’t flat enough. To fix, use a tapping block and rubber mallet to re-seat the plank. If gaps persist, check the subfloor for humps that prevent the plank from sitting flat.

Clicking or Hollow Sound

A hollow sound when walking is normal with floating floors but shouldn’t be excessive. It’s usually caused by insufficient or compressed underlayment, air gaps between the underlayment and subfloor, or debris under the flooring. Quality underlayment and a flat subfloor minimize this issue.

Planks Separating Over Time

If planks separate after installation, the likely cause is either a subfloor that isn’t flat (the planks bridge over a dip and the joint pops under pressure) or a low-quality click mechanism that loosens with use. Prevention is easier than the cure — ensure subfloor flatness before installation and choose a reputable brand.

Difficulty Disassembling

If you need to replace a damaged plank, you typically have to disassemble back to that plank from the nearest wall. Vinyl click-lock planks handle this well — they’re flexible enough to re-engage. Laminate and engineered wood click joints are more fragile and may break during disassembly.

Can click together flooring be installed over tile?

Yes, as long as the tile surface is flat and the grout lines aren’t too deep. Grout joints deeper than 1/8 inch may telegraph through thin vinyl planks — use a self-leveling skim coat or a thicker underlayment to smooth the surface. Laminate and SPC bridge over minor grout lines without issues.

Is click together flooring waterproof?

It depends on the material. Vinyl (LVP and SPC) click-together flooring is waterproof. Laminate and engineered hardwood are not — water seeping through the click joints damages the core and wood components. For wet areas, stick with vinyl products and consider a waterproof flooring option specifically.

How long does click together flooring last?

Quality laminate click flooring lasts 15 to 25 years. LVP and SPC last 15 to 25+ years depending on wear layer thickness. Engineered hardwood can last 20 to 40+ years and can be refinished to extend its life. The click mechanism doesn’t wear out — it’s the surface wear layer that determines lifespan.

Can you install click flooring on stairs?

Not as a floating floor. Stair treads and risers need to be glued and/or nailed for safety — a floating plank on a stair tread is a slip hazard. Most click-lock flooring manufacturers sell matching stair nosing pieces and recommend adhesive installation on stairs.

Do you need underlayment with click together flooring?
