The classic railroad-tie garden border has a problem the nose detects on a hot day: creosote. Wood ties are soaked in it, the EPA restricts their residential use around vegetable gardens and play areas, and they still rot within a couple of decades. Concrete railroad ties solve every one of those complaints — no preservative chemicals, no rot, no termites, essentially permanent — and modern precast versions even wear convincing wood-grain textures. The trade-offs are weight that borders on brutal and a higher price per stick. Here is what is actually available, what the pieces weigh and cost, and where they shine in a landscape.
Two Different Products Share One Name
Shopping gets confusing because “concrete tie” means two things. First, there are genuine railway ties: prestressed concrete sleepers cast for actual track use, roughly 8.5 feet long, about 10 inches wide, 7 to 9 inches thick, and a staggering 600 to 800 lb each. Railroads have installed them since the 1970s, and retired or surplus ones occasionally reach salvage yards. Second — and far more practical for yards — are precast landscape ties: garden-scale concrete timbers cast to mimic wood, typically 4 to 6 feet long, 6 to 8 inches wide, 4 to 6 inches thick, and a manageable-with-help 60 to 150 lb. Big-box garden centers sell short versions (2 to 4 ft “timber edgers” with wood grain, 20 to 45 lb) that stack like Lincoln Logs. Decide early which product you mean, because everything — cost, delivery, handling, uses — splits along that line.
The Faux Wood-Grain Factor
Modern molds are cast from actual weathered timbers, so good precast ties carry ring patterns, checks, and saw marks that read as wood from a few feet away. Most come integrally colored — browns, weathered gray, charcoal — with the pigment through the body, not painted on, so chips show colored concrete rather than gray. Product families to look for: Pavestone and Oldcastle timber-look edgers at the big boxes; regional precasters’ “faux wood tie” and “concrete landscape timber” lines; and boutique products like sleepers from architectural precast companies used in high-end garden design. If the stock versions look too uniform, a light dry-brush of concrete stain in a second tone breaks up repeated mold patterns — the giveaway of budget castings is seeing the identical knot every four feet.
Weight and Handling: Respect the Numbers
Concrete is roughly 150 lb per cubic foot, and there is no way around what that means:
- A 4-ft precast tie at 6×4 inches: ~90–100 lb — two people, or one strong back and bad judgment.
- A 6-ft tie at 8×6 inches: ~290 lb — hand truck, pipe rollers, or a machine.
- A genuine 8.5-ft rail sleeper: 600–800 lb — skid steer, mini-excavator, or tractor with forks. Full stop.
Plan the logistics before ordering: delivery trucks drop pallets at the curb, not in the back garden. Pipe rollers over plywood, a rented powered hand truck ($60/day), or a landscaper’s mini skid steer ($250–$350/day) turn an impossible project into a methodical one. The compensation for the weight is that gravity is the anchor — properly bedded concrete ties do not float, heave, or wander the way landscape timbers do, and nobody’s teenager relocates them.
Best Landscape Uses
Edging and Borders
The core application. Set ties along beds and paths on a 2-inch compacted gravel bed, tops flush or one inch proud of grade. The mass keeps mower wheels riding clean and mulch contained, and unlike wood there is no end-rot at the miter cuts. Short cast edgers curve gently around beds; full-length ties suit straight runs and formal lines.
Steps
Concrete ties make superb slope steps: cut a level bench into the grade, bed each tie on compacted gravel, pin the tie in front against the risers behind, and backfill the tread with gravel, decomposed granite, or pavers. A 6-inch-thick tie is a code-friendly riser height, the texture is naturally slip-resistant, and the steps will outlast the hillside’s landscaping twice over. For traffic-heavy steps, adhere ties to each other with polyurethane construction adhesive (PL Premium class) in addition to pins.
Raised Beds and Planters
This is where concrete beats wood ties without argument: no creosote or copper preservatives near food crops, ever. Two or three stacked courses give a 12-to-18-inch bed; stagger joints, pin the courses with 1/2-inch rebar through cast holes or epoxy-set pins, and line the inside with filter fabric to keep soil from weeping through joints. The thermal mass moderates soil temperature swings — a genuine agronomic bonus in spring and fall.
Small Retaining Applications
For a knee-high terrace — two, maybe three courses holding a planting bed on gentle grade — stacked and pinned concrete ties with a gravel backfill and setback per course work well. Sourcing: Rail Salvage vs Precast Garden Lines
Precast garden ties are the easy route: garden centers, Home Depot and Lowe’s (edger sizes), landscape supply yards, and regional precast plants (best selection of full-length faux-grain product; search “precast landscape timbers” plus your region). Genuine salvaged rail sleepers come from railroad-material salvage dealers and occasionally Craigslist or Marketplace near rail corridors. Salvage sleepers are cheap for their mass but come with caveats: expect chipped corners, exposed prestressing strand at damaged ends (grind and patch or cut back), embedded steel fittings, and that 700-lb handling problem at every step. They suit rural projects with a tractor on hand — farm bridges, equipment ramps, heavy crib walls — more than suburban gardens.

Per linear foot installed, concrete runs one and a half to three times wood — and then never needs replacing. A wood-tie border replaced every 15 to 20 years loses the 30-year math to concrete decisively, before counting the chemical-free advantage around gardens.
Concrete Ties vs the Alternatives, Briefly
Within the “permanent timber look” niche, concrete ties compete with three options. Composite/recycled-plastic landscape timbers are lighter (a 6-footer is one-person work) and rot-proof but flex under load, fade unevenly, and read as plastic up close — fine for low borders, weak for steps. Natural stone steps and wall block beat concrete ties on prestige and match engineered wall systems, but cost two to four times more per face foot. And modern non-creosote wood (ground-contact pressure-treated 6×6s) remains the budget king at $25 to $45 per 8-foot timber — it simply restarts the rot clock, buying 15 to 25 years. Concrete ties win specifically where you want the timber aesthetic, food-safe chemistry, and a never-again maintenance schedule, and where the installation crew (or your back) can handle the mass once.
Installation Notes That Prevent Regret
Bed every tie on 2 inches of compacted gravel, never bare soil — point loading on an uneven clay base is how brittle materials crack. Cut with a diamond blade in a circular saw or angle grinder (score all around, then snap or finish the cut), wearing a real respirator: concrete dust is a silica hazard. Pin stacked assemblies with rebar or epoxy pins, glue courses that people will climb, and leave small drainage gaps between ties in wet climates rather than sealing joints.
