Pouring a slab looks simple until you watch a poorly prepped one crack down the middle after its first hard winter. A concrete slab backyard patio is one of the most affordable, durable outdoor surfaces you can build, but the result depends entirely on the base, the thickness, and how you handle curing. Done right, a backyard slab gives you a flat, low-maintenance foundation for a patio, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, or shed that lasts 30 years or more. What a Backyard Concrete Slab Costs

For a 12-by-16-foot slab at 4 inches thick, the math is 12 x 16 x 0.333 feet = about 64 cubic feet, or roughly 2.4 cubic yards. Always order about 10 percent extra to account for uneven subgrade and spillage, so you would order 2.6 to 2.7 yards.
For slabs larger than about one cubic yard, ordering ready-mix delivered by truck is far easier and cheaper than mixing bags by hand.
