Correct Refrigerator Temperature: What USDA and Real Thermometers Say

The dial inside your fridge is lying to you. Most refrigerators have temperature settings labeled 1 through 7 or “Min to Max” rather than actual degrees, and the displayed temperature on digital units is often 4 to 8 degrees off from the real internal temperature. Freezer Temperature Matters More Than People Think

The freezer should sit at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Most home freezers run between -5 and +10 depending on the setting and how full the freezer is.

Frozen food at 0 degrees stays safe indefinitely (though quality degrades after 3 to 12 months for most items). Frozen food at 10 degrees develops freezer burn within weeks and ice cream goes grainy.

Verify with a freezer thermometer the same way you verify the fridge. Leave it for 12 hours, then check. If your freezer cannot get below 5 degrees Fahrenheit, the seal may be failing or the condenser coils need cleaning.

Common Reasons a Fridge Runs Warm
