You set out a flat of tomato and pepper seedlings on a Saturday, and by Monday morning half of them are lying flat, snipped off cleanly right at the soil line. That signature overnight beheading is the calling card of cut worms in garden beds across the country, and it is one of the most frustrating pests a vegetable grower deals with because the damage is done before you ever see the culprit. Cutworms are not worms at all. They are the larvae of several species of night-flying moths, and once you understand how they live and feed, you can shut them down with a handful of cheap, reliable tactics.
What Cutworms Actually Are
Cutworms are the caterpillar stage of noctuid moths, a large family that includes the black cutworm, the variegated cutworm, and the bronzed cutworm. The adults are drab gray or brown moths with a wingspan around 1.5 inches. They do no damage themselves. The larvae are the problem, and they earn their name by chewing through the stems of young plants at or just below the soil surface, dropping the top of the plant like a felled tree.
You will find them from Florida to Maine and out to the West Coast, in nearly every USDA zone where people grow vegetables. Because several species overlap, you can see damage from early spring right through fall, though the heaviest losses almost always hit newly transplanted seedlings in the first four to six weeks of the season.
How to Identify Cutworm Damage and the Larvae
The damage pattern is diagnostic. Look for these signs before you blame anything else:
- Seedlings cut off at the base. The stem is severed cleanly at or slightly below the soil line, and the toppled top is often left lying right there, sometimes partially eaten.
- Overnight losses. Plants that looked healthy at dusk are down by morning. Cutworms feed after dark and hide during the day.
- Wilting or notched leaves on larger plants. Older seedlings may survive with chewed foliage rather than a full cut.
- Missing transplants in a row. A gap of three or four cut plants in a run of otherwise healthy ones points to a single larva working down the line.
To confirm, dig gently into the top 1 to 2 inches of soil within a few inches of a freshly cut plant. Cutworm larvae are 1 to 2 inches long, fat, and soft-bodied, colored gray, brown, tan, or dull green, sometimes with faint stripes or speckling. The dead giveaway is their defensive posture: disturbed, they curl tightly into a C shape and play dead. If you find one curled into that comma shape in the top inch of moist soil, you have your answer.
The Cutworm Life Cycle
Understanding the calendar tells you when to strike. Adult moths lay eggs in late summer and fall, often on grass, weeds, or crop debris. In much of the country, larvae or pupae overwinter in the soil and in plant litter. As soil warms in spring, larvae become active and start feeding right when you are setting out tender transplants, which is exactly why the timing feels so cruel.
A single generation runs roughly 30 to 45 days from egg to pupa, and warm-climate zones 8 through 10 can see two to four generations a year, while cooler zones 4 through 6 usually get one or two. The females are strong fliers and lay 200 to 500 eggs each, so a small local moth population can seed a big larval outbreak the following spring.
Scout at Dusk and After Dark
Because cutworms hide by day, daytime scouting misses them. The most effective monitoring is a flashlight walk 60 to 90 minutes after sunset. Go slowly down each row and check the base of your seedlings. You will catch larvae out feeding, and you can drop them into a jar of soapy water on the spot. Ten minutes of hand-picking on three or four consecutive evenings will noticeably thin an infestation, especially in a small raised bed where a single grower can cover the whole planting.
Do this the same week you transplant. The first two weeks after setting out seedlings are the window when a few larvae can wipe out a whole flat, and nightly patrols during that window pay off more than any spray.
Physical Barriers: Collars That Actually Work
The single most reliable defense for a home garden is a physical stem collar, because it works whether or not you ever see the larva. The larva cannot wrap around a stem it cannot reach.
- Cut collars 3 inches tall from toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, aluminum foil, or thin cardboard. A tube cut into 3-inch sections is the fastest source.
- Slip one collar around each transplant at planting time so the stem sits in the center.
- Sink the collar about 1 inch into the soil, leaving 2 inches above ground. Burying the lower edge is what stops larvae that tunnel just under the surface.
- Leave the collars in place for three to four weeks until stems toughen up. Cutworms rarely bother stems thicker than a pencil.
Foil collars have a bonus: many gardeners report the metal edge deters the soft-bodied larvae even more than cardboard. For a 4-by-8-foot bed of 20 transplants, a single cardboard tube supply costs nothing and takes about ten minutes to install.
Biological and Organic Controls
When you are past the transplant stage or have a heavy population, layer in biological controls. None of these is a silver bullet, so combine two or three.
Beneficial Nematodes
Beneficial nematodes in the Steinernema group, particularly Steinernema carpocapsae, actively hunt cutworm larvae in the soil and are one of the more effective biologicals against them. Apply them to moist soil in the evening at the label rate, typically around 1 million nematodes per square foot or one package per 200 to 500 square feet, when soil temperatures are above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Water them in and keep the bed damp for the following week so they can move and infect larvae.
Bt and Spinosad
Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacterial insecticide that works well on many caterpillars, but its effect on cutworms is limited because they feed at the soil line rather than on treated foliage. The kurstaki strain can help against species that climb and feed on leaves, applied at dusk, but do not count on it alone. Spinosad, a fermentation-derived organic insecticide, is more effective; spray or drench the soil surface and lower stems in the evening, since spinosad breaks down in sunlight. Both are approved for organic gardens.
Diatomaceous Earth
Food-grade diatomaceous earth sprinkled in a ring around each stem abrades the soft larvae. It is a modest help, but it only works while dry, so you have to reapply after rain or irrigation. Treat it as a supplement to collars, not a replacement.
Cultural and Long-Term Prevention
Most of your cutworm pressure is set the previous fall, so the best control is preventive. Build these habits into your routine:
- Till in fall. Turning the top 3 to 4 inches of soil after harvest exposes overwintering larvae and pupae to birds and freezing temperatures and disrupts their shelter.
- Clear weeds and debris. Moths lay eggs in weedy, grassy ground. Keep a clean 2 to 3-foot border around beds and remove crop residue that shelters larvae.
- Delay planting slightly. Waiting a week or two after your last frost date lets the first hungry larvae pupate before your transplants go in.
- Encourage birds. Robins, blackbirds, and chickadees eat cutworms. A birdbath and a couple of perches near the garden turn the local flock into free pest control, and following the tiller with a rake brings larvae to the surface where birds grab them.
- Weed the fall before. Killing grassy egg-laying sites in August and September cuts next spring’s population directly.
What Does Not Work
Skip the folk remedies that waste your time. Coffee grounds are widely claimed to repel cutworms, but there is no reliable evidence they do anything against the larvae, and heavy grounds can actually mat and hold moisture that pests like. Crushed eggshells are similarly overrated as a barrier. Broad-spectrum garden dusts will kill cutworms but also wipe out the ground beetles and other predators that keep them in check, so you trade a short-term win for a worse problem next season. Stick with collars, evening hand-picking, nematodes, and fall cleanup, and you will keep cut worms in garden beds from ever ruining another flat of seedlings.
A Simple Season-Long Plan
Put it all together and the routine is straightforward. In fall, clear weeds and lightly till. At transplant time, install a 3-inch collar around every seedling sunk 1 inch deep. For the first three weeks, walk the beds after dark with a flashlight and hand-pick any larvae you find. If you are still losing plants, drench the soil with beneficial nematodes and hit the stems with spinosad at dusk. That layered approach costs a few dollars and a few evenings, and it reliably protects the vulnerable early plantings that cutworms target most.
