Planning the Grid Layout
Measure the room and decide between 2×2 or 2×4 tile sizes. 2×2 tiles look more residential and hide imperfections in the main runners better. 2×4 is faster to install, uses less grid material, and looks more commercial. Most finished basements look best in 2×4 with smooth-faced acoustic tiles.
Sketch the room on graph paper and lay out the grid so border tiles on opposite walls match in width. Nothing screams amateur faster than a 22-inch tile against one wall and a 2-inch sliver against the other. Adjust your starting line until both borders fall at roughly 12 to 22 inches wide.
