The honest answer to does LVP need underlayment is: sometimes, and less often than the underlayment aisle wants you to believe. If your luxury vinyl plank has an attached pad — and most mid-range and premium LVP sold today does — you add nothing underneath except possibly a thin vapor film over concrete. If it’s a bare-backed plank, you add one thin, dense pad rated for vinyl. And if you’re gluing it down, you add nothing at all. Why LVP Is Different From Laminate
People carry laminate rules over to vinyl and get burned. Laminate is a rigid wood-fiber product that always wants a cushioning pad. LVP is different in two ways that change the math. First, vinyl is flexible and thin — a typical click plank is 4 to 8 mm versus laminate’s 8 to 12 mm — so its locking joints are smaller and weaker. Put a thick, soft foam under LVP and every footstep flexes the plank into the cushion, working the joints until they gap or snap. That’s why virtually every LVP manufacturer caps underlayment thickness, usually at 1 to 1.5 mm, and specifies a minimum density. Second, vinyl is already quiet and slightly resilient by nature, so it simply needs less help than laminate does.
This is the single most important sentence in this article: follow your specific manufacturer’s underlayment spec, because an unapproved pad voids the warranty — and joint failure from soft underlayment is precisely the claim they’ll deny.
Scenario 1: LVP With Attached Pad
Most LVP over about $2.50 per square foot now ships with a pre-attached backing — usually 1 to 1.5 mm of IXPE foam or cork. Lifeproof, most Shaw and Mohawk lines, COREtec, and the better Costco and Sam’s Club SKUs all include it. If your planks have this, the answer to the underlayment question is no. Adding a second pad creates a stacked cushion that flexes the joints, and every major brand explicitly prohibits it.
The one exception is vapor, not cushion: over a concrete slab, several brands still want a 6-mil polyethylene film beneath the planks, taped at seams. It adds no softness — it’s purely a moisture barrier — and it costs about $0.10 to $0.15 per square foot. Check your installation sheet; some attached pads are closed-cell and rated as their own vapor barrier, in which case even the film is unnecessary.
Scenario 2: Bare-Back Click LVP
Cheaper click LVP and some commercial lines come with no attached pad. Here a separate underlayment earns its place, and it does four things: dampens the hollow clacky sound of vinyl over subfloor, bridges tiny texture imperfections, adds a vapor barrier over concrete, and slightly improves underfoot feel. What you want:
- Thickness: 1 mm to 1.5 mm. Not the 3 mm laminate foam — too soft, too thick.
- Density: a pad specifically marketed for LVT/LVP. Look for compressive ratings; dense IXPE or rubber-based products hold up, cheap open-cell PE doesn’t.
- Vapor barrier: attached film with taped seams if you’re over concrete.
Products I’ve had good results with: Floor Muffler LVT, Roberts Silent 3-in-1 in its vinyl-approved thickness, MP Global QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl, and generic 1.5 mm IXPE rolls. Expect $0.30 to $0.65 per square foot. A 500-square-foot job, then, is roughly $150 to $325 in pad — a small fraction of the flooring bill for a floor that sounds and feels a class above.
Scenario 3: Glue-Down and Loose-Lay LVP
Glue-down vinyl bonds directly to the subfloor with pressure-sensitive or hard-set adhesive. There is no underlayment layer in this assembly — the adhesive needs a rigid, clean, porous-or-primed substrate, and any foam in between destroys the bond. What glue-down demands instead is meticulous prep: skim-coating with a cementitious patch so every trowel ridge and screw dimple disappears, because 2 mm glue-down vinyl telegraphs everything. Over concrete, you also need a moisture test — calcium chloride or RH probe — and a slab reading over the adhesive’s limit (often 75 to 90 percent RH) means a rolled-on epoxy moisture mitigation coat, not a poly film.
Loose-lay LVP similarly goes straight to the subfloor; its friction backing is the system, and a pad defeats it.
What About Sound Ratings, Condos, and Second Floors?
If you live under an HOA or condo board, your floor assembly probably needs to hit IIC 50 or higher, sometimes IIC 60. Attached pads alone often get a vinyl assembly into the low 50s over a concrete deck; approved acoustic underlayments under bare-back planks can push higher. Two cautions from jobs I’ve done in condo buildings: first, get the required rating in writing from the board before buying anything; second, resist the temptation to sneak a thick acoustic foam under pad-attached planks to hit a number — use a vinyl-rated acoustic pad under bare-back planks instead, or choose a plank whose tested assembly documentation already meets the requirement. Manufacturers publish IIC test reports for exactly this situation.
Subfloor Prep Matters More Than the Pad
Whatever you put under LVP, remember the pad is not a leveling tool. Vinyl manufacturers typically demand flatness of 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and thin planks show every violation. Before any underlayment or planks go down: drive proud fasteners, sand OSB seam swell, fill dips with patching compound, vacuum until the floor is genuinely clean. Over old tile, fill grout lines wider than about 1/8 inch or the lines will ghost through within months — I’ve watched it happen through both an attached pad and a separate one. Fifteen dollars of floor patch beats any underlayment upgrade for final floor quality.
Common Mistakes, Fast
- Doubling up: foam pad under pad-attached LVP. Bouncy joints, voided warranty, floor fails in a year.
- Using 3 mm laminate foam under vinyl because it was on sale. Too thick, too soft.
- Skipping the vapor film over a slab in a below-grade basement. Moisture accumulates under the vinyl; you’ll smell it before you see it.
- Installing over old cushion-backed sheet vinyl. That soft layer acts like an illegal underlayment; most specs require removing it or capping with a hard underlayment panel.
- Expecting the pad to fix an unflat floor. It won’t, and now the dip bounces.

Can I use cork instead of foam? Yes, if it’s a vinyl-rated thickness — cork at 1 to 1.5 mm is a legitimate acoustic option, though it costs more and must stay dry. Does underlayment make LVP warmer? Marginally; a pad adds a small R-value bump over concrete, but if warmth is the goal, look at rooms-side solutions because no 1.5 mm pad turns a cold slab cozy. Radiant heat? Most LVP allows in-floor heat up to about 80 to 85°F surface temperature; use the pad the manufacturer lists as radiant-compatible and nothing thicker. Stairs? No underlayment on stairs — planks and nosings get glued directly for safety.
So, does LVP need underlayment? Let the plank answer for you. Flip a plank over: if there’s foam or cork bonded to the back, your underlayment decision is already made — add nothing but a code-of-the-manufacturer vapor film on concrete. If the back is bare and you’re clicking it together, buy one thin, dense, vinyl-rated pad and tape the seams. If there’s glue involved, spend the pad money on patching compound and prep instead. Match those three rules to your installation sheet and the floor will stay quiet, tight, and warrantied for as long as you own the house.
