Dryer Air Duct: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Roughly 2,900 home fires per year in the US start in clothes dryers, and the leading cause is failed or blocked ductwork. Lint travels past the dryer’s internal filter at every cycle and collects in the rigid or flexible duct between the dryer and the exterior wall. A clogged or improperly installed dryer air duct drops drying efficiency by 30 to 50%, doubles the run time, and creates the heat buildup that turns a dust source into an ignition source. Code Requirements Worth Knowing

The 2021 International Residential Code limits dryer duct length to 35 feet of total developed length from dryer to terminal cap. Each 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet, each 45-degree as 2.5 feet. A duct with three 90-degree turns has 15 feet of “equivalent length” used up before you add any straight run.

Many dryer manufacturers (Whirlpool, GE, Maytag) publish stricter limits in their installation manuals, sometimes 25 or even 18 feet equivalent. Always pull the manual and use whichever number is lower. The duct material must be smooth-wall metal (galvanized steel or aluminum) within walls. Flexible foil or vinyl is prohibited inside concealed spaces. Plastic flex duct is prohibited entirely for clothes dryer venting.

Materials That Are Safe and Materials That Aren’t

Use only rigid 4-inch galvanized steel or aluminum smooth-wall duct between the dryer and the wall penetration. The smooth interior allows lint to travel through rather than catching on ridges. UL 2158A-listed semi-rigid aluminum flex (Deflecto SAF4, Builders Best 110173) is acceptable for the short transition between the dryer and the wall, no more than 6 to 8 feet.

Foil-faced flex (the silver plastic-like stuff) and white vinyl flex are both code violations and major fire risks. If you see either between your dryer and the wall, replace immediately. Material cost for proper rigid duct is under $40 for a typical run.

Termination Cap and Wall Penetration

Use a wall cap with a backdraft damper that opens only when the dryer is running. The cap should NOT have a screen or mesh. Lint catches on screens within weeks and shuts down airflow. The Heartland Dryer Vent Closure DVC4WHR and Dundas Jafine ProVent are two caps that pass code without the screen trap.

Wall penetrations through brick or stone need a metal sleeve and proper sealant. Caulk the exterior with DAP Dynaflex 230 (paintable, 35-year flexibility) and seal the interior penetration with high-temp foil tape rather than duct tape. Standard duct tape adhesive fails at the temperatures dryer exhaust reaches.

How to Tell Your Duct Needs Cleaning

  • Drying times have crept from 45 minutes to 75 minutes or more for the same load
  • The top of the dryer is hot to the touch at the end of a cycle
  • Clothes come out hotter than usual or with a slight musty smell
  • The laundry room is more humid than usual during a cycle
  • Lint is visible around the wall cap on the exterior of the house

Any one of these signs means the duct is partially clogged. Two or more means do not run the dryer until it is cleaned.

  3. Discard old foil or vinyl flex immediately; do not reuse

  5. Attach to the dryer outlet first with a stainless worm-gear clamp tightened with a 1/4-inch nut driver
  6. Connect the other end to the wall stub with a second clamp
