Buy the right one and you have a square, weathertight opening in an afternoon instead of a weekend of trial and error.

That coordination matters more than most homeowners realize, because a mismatched sill is the number one cause of drafts, water intrusion, and doors that drag. What Comes in the Kit
A complete frame kit centers on three jamb pieces milled from the same stock so the reveal is consistent. Standard jamb depth is 4-9/16 inches for a 2×4 wall with half-inch drywall and half-inch sheathing, though 6-9/16 inch jambs exist for 2×6 walls. Confirm which one your wall needs before ordering, because a jamb that is too shallow leaves a gap and one too deep sits proud of the drywall.
The threshold itself is the star component. Better kits use an adjustable sill with an aluminum base and a composite or oak cap over a section of expanded PVC to break the thermal path. The cap has hidden screws that let you raise or lower it a quarter inch so the door sweep seals without binding. For the threshold, look at the cap material and the substrate underneath. An oak cap looks warm indoors but needs finishing and can gray if it gets wet; a composite or fiberglass cap shrugs off moisture with no upkeep. The base should be aluminum with a positive slope to the exterior so water drains away, and the end caps should be sealed. Cheap thresholds skip the thermal break, and you will feel that cold strip under your feet all winter. Spend the extra ten or fifteen dollars for a thermally broken sill.

A bare frame kit with jambs, brickmould, and an adjustable threshold runs roughly $80 to $200 for primed wood and $150 to $350 for PVC or composite. If you buy the frame as part of a pre-hung exterior door, the whole assembly with slab lands anywhere from $250 for a builder-grade steel unit to well over $1,200 for a fiberglass door with sidelights. The threshold alone, if you only need to replace the sill, is typically $35 to $90.
Installation adds to the total if you hire out. A pro will charge $150 to $500 in labor to set a frame and hang a door, more if the opening needs framing repair or new flashing. Doing it yourself keeps that money in your pocket, and the job is well within reach for a homeowner with a level, a drill, and patience. Budget an extra $20 to $40 for a sill pan, flashing tape, backer rod, and quality polyurethane sealant, all of which are non-negotiable for a lasting install.
Preparing the Opening
Start by pulling the old unit and inspecting the framing. Anywhere you find soft or blackened wood, especially at the sill plate and the bottom of the trimmer studs, cut it out and sister in fresh lumber. A door is only as sound as the framing it hangs on, and skipping this step guarantees the new threshold will fail early. Vacuum the opening and check that the subfloor at the sill is flat and solid.
Install a sill pan next. This is a molded plastic or metal tray that sits under the threshold and directs any water that gets past the door back to the exterior. Bed it in a bead of sealant, and if the kit did not come with one, buy an adjustable pan for about $25. Run self-adhered flashing tape up the sides and over the pan flange so the whole base is a waterproof bathtub. Setting and Shimming the Frame
Dry-fit the frame in the opening and confirm it drops in with even reveals. Set the threshold onto a continuous bead of sealant over the sill pan, then check the sill for level across its width. Shim under the sill in the center and at both ends until it reads dead level; a threshold that dips in the middle will pond water and let it wick under the sweep. Once the sill is level, tack the hinge-side jamb.
Plumb the hinge jamb with a 6-foot level, insert tapered shims behind each hinge location, and drive screws or 10d galvanized casing nails through the jamb and shims into the trimmer. Hang the slab or, for a pre-hung, verify the factory reveal, then shim and fasten the strike jamb so the gap around the door is a consistent 1/8 inch. Do not overdrive fasteners, which bows the jamb and throws off the reveal. Snap off the protruding shims flush with the jamb.
Sealing and Weatherproofing
With the frame fixed, adjust the threshold cap. Turn the hidden screws until the door sweep just kisses the cap and the weatherstrip compresses lightly all around; you should be able to slide a dollar bill under the sweep with slight drag. Too tight and the door is hard to latch, too loose and you get drafts. Test the swing and latch several times before moving on.
Seal the exterior last. Run backer rod into any gap wider than a quarter inch between the brickmould and the siding, then tool a continuous bead of paintable polyurethane or high-quality siliconized acrylic sealant around the sides and top of the brickmould. Leave the very bottom of the side casings unsealed for about an inch so any incidental water can weep out rather than get trapped. Insulate the shim gaps between the jamb and the framing with minimally expanding foam, and finish by caulking the interior casing. Do these steps in order and your new frame will stay square, dry, and draft-free for decades.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The failures I see most often trace back to skipped fundamentals. Setting the threshold without a sill pan is the biggest one; the frame looks fine on day one, but the first wind-driven rain finds its way under the sill and rots the subfloor invisibly for a year before anyone notices. Never install a threshold directly on bare subfloor. The second common error is fastening the jamb without checking the sill for level first, which locks in a twist that no amount of hinge adjustment can fix.
Overtightening fasteners and forgetting the expansion and weep details also cause trouble. Cinching a screw too hard bows the jamb inward, pinching the door and killing the reveal, so snug is enough. Sealing the very bottom of the exterior casing traps any water that gets behind the brickmould instead of letting it weep out. Finally, using standard expanding foam instead of the low-expansion door-and-window type can push the jambs out of plumb as it cures.
