Rotted casing around an entry door is one of the most common repair calls in home exteriors, and it almost always traces to the same two mistakes: bare-backed pine trim and missing flashing. Exterior door trim lives in the splash zone — it takes roof runoff, wind-driven rain, sprinkler spray, and sun, all while sealing the gap between the door frame and the siding. Choose the right material and detail the water management correctly, and the trim outlasts the door; get either wrong and you’ll be digging punky wood out of the bottom corners within five years. Here’s how to do it right.

Brickmold and the Other Standard Profiles

The default exterior door casing in America is brickmold — a roughly 2-inch-wide, 1-1/4-inch-thick molded profile originally designed to bridge the gap between a door frame and brick veneer. Most pre-hung exterior doors ship with it attached. Beyond brickmold, common choices are flat casing (1×4 or 1×6 square stock for farmhouse and modern homes), ranch-style tapered casing, and built-up Craftsman surrounds with a flat header and cap. Sizing guidance: brickmold or 1×4 (3-1/2 inches) suits most homes; wide flat casing at 5-1/2 inches makes an entry read more substantial and is the current default in new construction; and the header can go a size wider than the legs for a traditional look. Whatever the profile, exterior casing should stand proud of the siding plane so the siding can butt into it cleanly.

Material Options Compared

Cellular PVC: The Modern Default

PVC trim (Azek, Versatex, Kleer, and big-box house brands) has taken over exterior trim for a simple reason — it cannot rot, ever. It cuts and nails like soft pine, takes paint well (light colors only, unless using vinyl-safe paint, because dark colors overheat it), and comes in every standard profile including brickmold. Cost runs $2.50 to $6 per linear foot, roughly double primed pine. Its quirks are movement and fastening: PVC expands lengthwise with heat, so long runs need adhesive at joints (PVC cement or Extreme PVC adhesive), fasteners every 16 inches, and paint or sealed joints per manufacturer specs. For door surrounds — short runs near grade and splash — it is the best answer for most homes, full stop.

Wood: Traditional, Paintable, Vulnerable

Primed finger-jointed pine brickmold costs $1 to $2.50 per linear foot and looks right on historic homes, but it’s the material generating all those rot repairs. If you use wood, buy the details that matter: back-prime every surface including cut ends before installation, keep the bottom ends 1/4 inch off the sill or use composite end blocks, and choose species wisely — cedar and sapele beat pine substantially. Many lumberyards also stock treated-pine brickmold (about $1.50 to $3 per foot) that resists rot far better for a small premium.

Composite and Fiber Cement

Wood-composite trim (engineered wood like LP SmartSide trim, roughly $1.50 to $3 per foot) offers wood’s stiffness with resin-and-wax rot resistance and holds dark paint better than PVC. Fiber cement trim (HardieTrim, $2 to $4 per foot) is fireproof and dead-stable but demands special blades, generates silica dust (wear a respirator), and its crisp but slightly industrial look suits fiber-cement-sided homes best. Both are legitimate; neither installs quite as easily as PVC.

The Flashing Details That Actually Prevent Rot

Trim doesn’t keep water out of a wall — flashing does; the trim just protects the flashing and looks good. Three details are non-negotiable. First, head flashing: a metal or rigid PVC drip cap must sit over the top piece of casing, tucked up behind the housewrap or siding above, so water sheds over the trim face instead of behind it. Second, the housewrap or felt must lap over that drip cap flange, never behind it — water runs downhill, and every layer above must overlap the layer below. Third, sill-corner protection: the bottom corners of a door opening are where 80 percent of failures start, so flexible flashing tape (Vycor, ZIP stretch tape) should wrap the sill and run up the jambs before trim goes on. If you’re re-trimming an existing door and find the old flashing missing — common on 1980s-2000s production homes — add it now; it’s a $25 roll of tape versus a future framing repair.

Installing Exterior Door Trim, Step by Step

  1. Strip and inspect. Remove old casing with a flat bar, then probe the sheathing and framing behind it. Repair soft framing now — trim over rot is a bandage on a broken bone.
  2. Flash. Tape sill corners and jambs, verify or install housewrap laps, and dry-fit the drip cap for the header.
  3. Cut the legs and header. Miter brickmold at 45 degrees, or butt-join flat casing with the header overhanging the legs by 1/2 to 3/4 inch per side. Leave 1/8-to-3/16-inch reveal from the door frame edge.
  4. Fasten. Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails (8d) or exterior trim screws, into framing, every 16 inches — never bright finish nails, which streak rust within a year.
  5. Seal. Glue miters (exterior wood glue or PVC cement), then caulk the trim-to-siding and trim-to-frame joints with a quality polyurethane or hybrid sealant like OSI Quad Max ($8 to $10 per tube) — not cheap painter’s caulk. Leave the bottom edge uncaulked so any water that gets in can drain.
  6. Paint promptly. Two topcoats over primer, including a brushed seal on every exposed end grain.

Budget two to four hours for a straightforward re-trim. Hiring it out typically runs $200 to $500 per door depending on material and rot repair.

Repair or Replace? Triaging Existing Trim

Not every soft spot demands a full re-trim. Localized rot confined to the bottom few inches of a leg — the usual pattern — can be repaired credibly with a two-part system: dig out the punky wood back to sound material, saturate with a liquid epoxy consolidant, then rebuild the profile with structural epoxy filler (Abatron WoodEpox or Bondo Wood Filler, $30 to $60 for the pair), sand, prime, and paint. Done well, the repair outlasts the surrounding pine. A step up from patching is the splice: cut the leg square 12 inches above the damage and replace just the bottom section with matching PVC brickmold, gluing and pinning the joint — you get a rot-proof foot on the trim’s most vulnerable spot for a few dollars.

Replace rather than repair when rot extends behind the trim into the jamb or sheathing, when more than about a quarter of any piece is compromised, or when the flashing underneath was never installed — a cosmetic repair over a water-path problem just schedules the next failure. Cost-wise, an epoxy repair runs $50 to $150 DIY versus $200 to $500 for professional re-trimming, but the repair only makes sense on trim that’s otherwise sound and correctly flashed.

Style Upgrades Worth Considering

Since the trim’s coming off anyway, an entry upgrade costs little extra. A crosshead pediment — a molded header unit in PVC or polyurethane (Ekena, Fypon, $60 to $200) — dresses a colonial or traditional entry dramatically for an afternoon’s work. Craftsman homes shine with a flat 1×5 surround, 4/4 header capped with a small drip edge, and optional corbels. Modern homes go the other way: wide flat PVC casing, square edges, painted to match the door frame for a monolithic look. Pilasters and fluted casing suit formal brick facades. One caution — keep proportions honest to the house; a towering pediment on a modest ranch reads costume, not character.

Maintenance: The Five-Minute Annual Check

Each spring, run a screwdriver tip along the bottom 6 inches of each leg (the rot zone), check the caulk joints for splits, and look above the header for a lifted drip cap. Recaulk failed joints promptly and touch up paint on any exposed material. PVC trim reduces this ritual to a soap-and-water wash. Ten minutes a year is the entire maintenance budget for trim that was installed correctly — which is the whole argument for doing the flashing right the first time.
