Fanfold insulation is thin rigid foam, usually 1/4 or 3/8 inch thick, scored and folded into 2-foot panels that open into a continuous 24-to-50-foot run. Siding crews use it by the truckload as a leveling underlayment for vinyl siding, and it moonlights under laminate flooring, behind knee walls, and in a dozen shop uses. What it is not is meaningful insulation — at R-1 to R-1.5, the name oversells it. Here is what fanfold genuinely does well, what it costs, and when you should spend more for thicker foam instead.
What Fanfold Actually Is
Fanfold is polystyrene foam — XPS (extruded, the pink Owens Corning and blue DuPont versions) or EPS (expanded bead foam) — cut thin and kerf-scored every 2 feet so it folds flat into a bundle roughly 4 feet by 2 feet by 10 inches. Most products carry a facer on one or both sides: perforated poly film, foil, or a printed skin that adds tear resistance and, on foil versions, a slight radiant benefit. Standard bundles cover 200 sq ft (4 ft × 50 ft) and weigh under 20 pounds, which is the point — one installer can carry a wall’s worth of underlayment up a ladder in one hand.
Specs to expect: 1/4-inch fanfold rates about R-1; 3/8-inch, R-1.5. Perforated facers give a permeable product (often 5+ perms) that will not trap wall moisture — important, and worth checking, because a non-perforated foil product behaves as a vapor retarder and belongs only where the wall assembly wants one.
The Main Job: Leveling Under Vinyl Siding
Re-siding is where 95 percent of fanfold gets used, and its real function surprises people: it is less an insulator than a flattening layer. Old walls are wavy — clapboard edges, shrunken sheathing joints, hammer dents from decades of repairs — and vinyl siding telegraphs every ripple because the panels are thin and glossy. A layer of fanfold bridges those irregularities and gives the siding a flat, consistent plane, which is the difference between a re-side that looks factory-crisp and one that shows every sin of the 1962 wall underneath. It also adds a modest thermal blanket over the studs and gives nails a consistent bearing surface.
Install is fast by design. Start level at a corner, unfold horizontally across the wall, and tack with cap nails or wide-crown staples — just enough fasteners to hold it until the siding goes on, since siding nails do the permanent work. Tape vertical seams if you want an air-barrier assist, but do not treat fanfold as a water-resistive barrier: housewrap or equivalent WRB still goes on the wall (typically under the fanfold, per most manufacturer details), and windows still get flashed to the WRB, not the foam. Fanfold’s job is flat, not dry.
Fanfold Under Flooring
Flooring is the second life of this product. Thin EPS fanfold sold as laminate underlayment (Eco Cork-alternative brands, and generic 1/4-inch fanfold) goes under floating laminate and some LVP to smooth minor subfloor texture, add a touch of thermal break over concrete, and quiet the hollow clatter floating floors make. It works, with three cautions. First, check your flooring manufacturer’s spec: most floating floors allow foam underlayment up to about 1/4 inch and a compressibility limit, and too-soft or too-thick padding lets click joints flex and fail. Second, fanfold is not a moisture barrier — over concrete, a 6-mil poly vapor retarder still goes down first unless the product explicitly includes one. Third, never use it under nail-down hardwood or under vinyl sheet; it is a floating-floor accessory. For serious floor insulation — say R-10 under a basement slab or subfloor — fanfold’s R-1 is a rounding error, and you want proper 1-to-2-inch foam board with a subfloor panel system instead.

Fanfold vs. Thicker Foam: When to Upgrade
The honest decision rule is a climate-and-goals question. If the siding job is cosmetic and the walls already hold decent cavity insulation, fanfold is the right call — you get the flattening benefit for pennies and lose nothing. If the house has empty or thin wall cavities, or you are in climate zones 4 and up chasing real energy savings, the re-side is your once-in-30-years chance to add continuous exterior insulation, and the correct product is 1/2-inch to 1.5-inch rigid foam or insulated siding, with fanfold reserved for leveling only if needed. One inch of continuous XPS cuts wall heat loss meaningfully by breaking the stud thermal bridge; a quarter inch of fanfold does not. Codes agree: fanfold does not count toward continuous-insulation requirements in energy codes that mandate them.
There is also a buildout consideration in the other direction: thicker foam pushes window and door trim out, requiring jamb extensions and rework. Fanfold’s 1/4 inch disappears into existing trim reveals, which is exactly why remodelers love it on jobs where the budget stops at siding.
Install Mistakes That Undo the Benefit
Fanfold jobs go wrong in predictable ways, and every one is preventable. Mistake one: treating it as the weather barrier and skipping housewrap. Fanfold seams are not sealed drainage laps, and water that gets behind vinyl siding — which is designed to leak — needs a real WRB with flashed openings beneath it. Mistake two: over-nailing. Drive cap nails snug, not buried; a crushed panel telegraphs a dimple through the siding, exactly the flaw you bought the product to hide. Mistake three: running panels tight to grade. Keep foam 6 to 8 inches above soil in termite country so inspectors can see mud tubes, and never let it wick against damp concrete at the foundation line.
On floors, the equivalent sins are doubling up underlayment (fanfold over an attached-pad LVP creates a trampoline that breaks click joints), ignoring the flatness spec — foam hides texture, not dips, so subfloor low spots deeper than 3/16 inch over 10 feet still need patch compound — and taping seams with duct tape, which creeps; use the underlayment maker’s seam tape or sheathing tape. One more habit worth stealing from good siding crews: stage bundles flat and shaded on delivery day. A fanfold bundle left banded in direct summer sun can take a curl set within hours, and wavy panels defeat the entire purpose of a leveling layer. Five minutes of care at each of these points is the difference between an invisible underlayment and one you notice every time the light rakes across the wall.
Other Uses Worth Knowing
Cheap, light, rigid sheets find jobs everywhere: protective floor covering during remodels (painters and cabinet installers buy fanfold for exactly this), garage-door panel liner, camper and van window covers, knee-wall drafts topping, concrete curing blankets in mild weather, and craft or tradeshow backdrops. Keep two limits in mind across all of them — polystyrene burns and must be covered with drywall in living spaces, and sunlight chalks it within weeks, so it is a covered product, not a finish.
Fanfold earns its place when you judge it as what it is: the flattest $0.30 per square foot in the building aisle. Use it to make siding straight and floating floors quiet, size your expectations to R-1, and spend the real insulation money where an inch or more of foam can do real thermal work.
