Modified Bitumen: Asphalt, Evolved
Modified bitumen (“mod bit”) is asphalt reinforced with polymers — SBS for flexibility, APP for UV hardness — factory-formed into rolls, installed in two or three plies by torch, cold adhesive, or peel-and-stick. Think of it as the modern descendant of roll roofing with actual engineering: granulated cap sheets resist foot traffic and hail better than bare membranes, multiple plies mean redundancy, and peel-and-stick SBS systems have made small-roof DIY genuinely feasible. Built-Up Roofing: The Old Guard
BUR — alternating layers of hot asphalt and reinforcing felts, finished with gravel or a cap sheet — is the century-old system that still covers a huge share of commercial America. Three to five plies of redundancy make it extremely tolerant of minor damage; the gravel surfacing takes foot traffic, UV, and hail better than any membrane.
