Failing to extend the barrier up walls or around penetrations creates a “bathtub” that channels water laterally instead of stopping it. The barrier should run up the wall at least 4 inches and be sealed to the wall framing or vapor retarder.
Punctures from staples, screws, or nails during installation create paths for vapor. Use the minimum fasteners needed, and seal any necessary penetrations with sealant.
Testing Moisture Before Installation
For concrete subfloors, two tests are standard before any floor barrier or flooring installation. Calcium chloride tests (ASTM F1869) measure pounds of moisture per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours. Relative humidity probes (ASTM F2170) measure RH at depth in the slab.
Most manufacturers limit installation to slabs reading under 3 lbs/24 hours and 75 percent RH. Exceed those numbers and you need a more aggressive barrier system, regardless of what type of flooring you are installing.
