What Is Flooring Plywood?

Flooring plywood is plywood specifically rated and manufactured for use as a structural subfloor or underlayment beneath finished flooring materials. Unlike general-purpose plywood, flooring-grade plywood must meet specific standards for structural strength, dimensional stability, moisture resistance, and surface smoothness.

Plywood used in flooring applications serves two primary roles:

  • Structural subfloor: The primary floor platform that spans between joists and supports all loads. This is typically 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood nailed and glued directly to floor joists.
  • Underlayment: A thinner layer of smooth plywood installed on top of a subfloor to create a flat, uniform surface for the finished flooring. Common thicknesses are 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch.

Plywood Grades Explained

Plywood grading can be confusing, but understanding the system is essential for choosing the right product. Plywood is graded with two letters — one for each face. The first letter describes the quality of the front (top) face, and the second describes the back face.

Face Grade Letters

  • A: Smooth, sanded surface with minimal defects. Suitable for visible applications or surfaces that need to be painted or stained. Knots are small and neatly repaired.
  • B: Solid surface with some repaired knots and patches. Smooth but with more visible repairs than A grade. Good for underlayment applications.
  • C: Allows small knots, knotholes, and some splits. Not sanded smooth. Standard for structural subfloor use where appearance doesn’t matter.
  • C Plugged (C-P): Similar to C grade but with knotholes and defects filled with wood plugs. Smoother than standard C grade. Acceptable for underlayment under resilient flooring.
  • D: Allows larger knots, knotholes, and defects. Used only for back faces or interior structural applications.

Common Grades for Flooring

  • CDX: The most common subfloor plywood. C face, D back, X means exterior-rated glue (not that the plywood itself is rated for permanent exterior use). This is what you’ll find on the majority of residential subfloors, and it’s what I use for most structural subfloor applications.
  • BC: Better front face with a C back. Good choice when one face will be exposed or when using plywood as underlayment under thinner flooring.
  • AC: Premium front face suitable for visible applications. I use this when plywood will be stained and sealed as a finished floor or when the smoothest possible underlayment surface is needed.
  • AB: High-quality both sides. Rarely needed for flooring unless both sides will be visible (such as a loft floor that’s also a ceiling below).

Span Ratings

Beyond face grades, structural subfloor plywood carries a span rating — two numbers separated by a slash (like 32/16 or 48/24). The first number is the maximum recommended spacing for roof rafters in inches, and the second is the maximum floor joist spacing. A panel rated 32/16 can span joists up to 16 inches apart when used as flooring. Always verify that your plywood’s span rating matches or exceeds your actual joist spacing.

Thickness Guide for Flooring Plywood

Choosing the correct plywood thickness is critical for structural integrity and finished floor performance. Here’s what I recommend based on application:

Structural Subfloor Thickness

  • 3/4 inch (23/32″): The standard for residential subfloors over joists spaced 16″ on center. This is what building codes typically require and what I install in the vast majority of projects. Provides excellent rigidity and load-bearing capacity.
  • 5/8 inch (19/32″): Acceptable for joists spaced 16″ on center in light-use areas, but I don’t recommend it for main living spaces. The slight cost savings isn’t worth the reduced rigidity, which can lead to floor bounce and squeaks.
  • 1-1/8 inch: Used for joists spaced 24″ on center. Often a single-layer system that serves as both subfloor and underlayment. Common in commercial applications and some residential construction.

Underlayment Thickness

  • 1/4 inch: The most common underlayment thickness. Used over an existing subfloor to create a smooth, flat surface for vinyl, linoleum, or thin tile. Not structural — it’s purely for surface preparation.
  • 1/2 inch: Thicker underlayment for situations where more height build-up is needed or where the existing subfloor has significant irregularities. Also used when the finished floor needs additional support (such as stone tile).
  • 3/8 inch: An intermediate option for specific applications where 1/4 inch doesn’t provide enough build-up but 1/2 inch would create height transition issues.

Thickness by Finished Flooring Type

The right subfloor thickness also depends on what’s going on top:

  • Hardwood flooring: 3/4″ subfloor minimum. Provides sufficient nail-holding capacity for face-nailed or stapled hardwood.
  • Tile flooring: 3/4″ subfloor plus 1/2″ cement board or 1/2″ plywood underlayment. Total minimum of 1-1/4″ over joists for adequate rigidity to prevent tile cracking.
  • Vinyl/LVP flostrong>: 3/4″ subfloor with 1/4″ underlayment if the subfloor surface isn’t smooth enough.
  • Carpet: 3/4″ subfloor is sufficient. No underlayment needed — the carpet pad serves that purpose.
  • Laminate: 3/4″ subfloor with foam underlayment. No plywood underlayment typically needed.

Types of Plywood for Flooring

Softwood Plywood (Most Common)

The standard choice for subfloors. Made from pine, fir, or spruce veneers. CDX softwood plywood is the workhorse of the residential construction industry. It’s strong, affordable, and readily available. For structural subfloors, this is what I use 90% of the time.

Hardwood Plywood

Made from hardwood veneers like birch, maple, or oak. The smooth, grain-tight face of hardwood plywood makes it excellent for underlayment applications where surface smoothness is critical. It’s also the choice for plywood-as-finished-floor projects because the wood grain is more attractive.

Marine-Grade Plywood

Made with waterproof adhesive and void-free cores (no gaps between inner veneers). While not necessary for most flooring applications, I recommend marine-grade plywood for bathroom subfloors and any location where consistent moisture exposure is expected. It costs significantly more — $60-$100+ per sheet vs. $30-$50 for CDX — but the moisture resistance justifies the premium in wet areas.

Tongue and Groove (T&G) Plywood

Subfloor plywood with machined tongue-and-groove edges that interlock during installation. T&G plywood is the standard for modern subfloor construction because the interlocking edges eliminate differential deflection at panel edges (the annoying ridge you feel when one panel sits higher than its neighbor). I strongly recommend T&G plywood for all subfloor applications.

Sanded Plywood

Plywood with one or both faces sanded smooth at the factory. Essential for underlayment applications where the surface needs to be flat and free of splinters. Also necessary when plywood will be stained or painted as a finished floor. Sanded AC or BC grade is what I specify for underlayment work.

Plywood vs. OSB for Subfloors

This is one of the most debated topics in construction, and I have strong opinions based on decades of real-world experience.

OSB (Oriented Strand Board)

OSB is cheaper than plywood — typically 20-30% less per sheet — and it meets the same structural span ratings. For pure structural performance in dry conditions, OSB works fine, and it’s what most production builders use today because of the cost savings.

Why I Prefer Plywood

Despite the cost difference, I recommend plywood over OSB for subfloors whenever budget allows, and here’s why:

  • Moisture recovery: Plywood absorbs water and dries out without permanent damage. OSB swells — particularly at the edges — and never returns to its original dimensions. I’ve replaced countless OSB subfloors that swelled from construction moisture or minor leaks.
  • Edge holding: Plywood holds screws and nails at panel edges much better than OSB, which tends to crumble at fastener points near edges.
  • Surface smoothness: Plywood provides a smoother surface that’s better for thin flooring products that can telegraph subfloor imperfections.
  • Fastener holding: Plywood holds hardwood flooring staples and nails more securely than OSB, reducing the likelihood of squeaks and loose boards over time.

When OSB Is Acceptable

For budget-constrained projects in dry climates with proper weather protection during construction, OSB is a viable option. It works well under carpet, thick hardwood, and other flooring that doesn’t telegraph subfloor imperfections. I just wouldn’t use it in moisture-prone areas or under thin vinyl products.

Subfloor Installation Guide

Proper subfloor installation is critical for long-term flooring performance. Here’s my recommended process:

Preparation

Verify joist spacing and ensure all joists are level and in the same plane. Use a string line or laser level to check for high or low joists. Shim low joists and plane high joists as needed — a flat subfloor starts with flat framing. Apply construction adhesive (PL Premium or similar) to the top of each joist before setting panels.

Panel Layout

Start at one corner of the room with the groove edge against the wall. Stagger end joints by at least 4 feet between adjacent rows — never align end joints in adjacent rows, as this creates a weak line across the floor. Orient the long dimension of panels perpendicular to the joists for maximum strength.

Fastening

This is where many installers cut corners, and it always comes back as squeaky floors. Here’s my fastening schedule:

  • Use 2-1/2″ ring-shank nails or #8 x 2-1/2″ coated deck screws
  • Fasten every 6″ along panel edges (where panels meet over a joist)
  • Fasten every 12″ along intermediate joists (in the field of the panel)
  • Keep fasteners 3/8″ from panel edges to prevent splitting
  • Ensure every fastener hits a joist — missed fasteners cause squeaks

I’m a strong advocate for screwing rather than nailing subfloors. Screws hold better long-term and resist backing out. A screw gun with a depth-set clutch makes this fast and consistent. The small additional cost in screws is nothing compared to the cost of fixing squeaky floors later.

Gap Management

Leave a 1/8″ gap between panel edges and ends to allow for expansion. T&G panels are designed with this gap built into the tongue-and-groove joint. At walls, maintain a 1/2″ gap that will be covered by baseboard trim. Never force panels tight together — expansion pressure will cause buckling.

Adhesive

Always use subfloor adhesive (construction adhesive rated for subfloor use) between the plywood and joists. Apply a continuous 1/4″ bead along each joist. The adhesive bond supplements the mechanical fasteners and dramatically reduces squeaking. This single step eliminates more squeaks than any other measure, and I’ve been adamant about it on every job for the past 15 years.

Plywood as Underlayment

When the existing subfloor is rough, uneven, or not suitable for direct installation of the finished floor, a plywood underlayment provides the solution.

When You Need Plywood Underlayment

  • Installing sheet vinyl or thin luxury vinyl over a rough subfloor
  • Covering a damaged or uneven existing subfloor
  • Adding height to match adjacent flooring levels
  • Providing a smooth nailing surface for hardwood over concrete (plywood on sleepers)
  • Creating a stable base for tile when cement board alone isn’t sufficient

Underlayment Installation Tips

Use 1/4″ or 1/2″ sanded plywood rated for underlayment use (look for the “Underlayment” stamp). Fasten with 1″ ring-shank underlayment nails or narrow-crown staples every 4″ along edges and 6″ in the field. Stagger joints so they don’t align with the subfloor panel joints below. Fill any nail holes, gaps, or surface defects with floor patch compound and sand smooth before installing the finished floor.

One common mistake I see: using construction-grade plywood (CDX) as underlayment under vinyl flooring. The rough surface and knots in CDX will telegraph through thin vinyl, creating visible bumps and imperfections. Always use sanded underlayment-grade plywood (BC or better) for these applications.

Plywood as a Finished Floor

Using plywood as a finished floor has become a legitimate design choice, not just a budget compromise. When done well, plywood floors have a distinctive, modern aesthetic that actually works beautifully in certain spaces.

Best Plywood for Finished Floors

  • Baltic birch plywood: My top choice for finished plywood floors. Uniform birch veneer with a clean, light grain pattern. The multi-layer edge (visible when cut) is actually a design feature.
  • Sanded AC fir plywood: More rustic character with prominent grain. Works well in farmhouse and cottage-style spaces.
  • Cabinet-grade maple or oak plywood: Highest quality face veneers for a look closer to traditional hardwood.

Finishing a Plywood Floor

Sand the entire surface starting with 80-grit and progressing through 120, 150, and 220 grit. Fill any defects with wood filler between sanding passes. Apply a quality wood stain if desired — plywood absorbs stain differently than solid wood, so always test on a scrap piece first. Finish with 3-4 coats of water-based polyurethane, sanding lightly with 220-grit between coats.

The total cost for a DIY plywood finished floor runs about $2-$4 per square foot including materials and finish — a fraction of hardwood flooring. The result is unique, durable, and surprisingly beautiful when done with care.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

After two decades of fixing other people’s flooring problems, here are the subfloor mistakes I encounter most often:

  • Wrong thickness: Using 1/2″ plywood where 3/4″ is needed leads to bouncy, squeaky floors and can void finished flooring warranties.
  • No adhesive: Skipping subfloor adhesive is the number one cause of squeaky floors. It takes 10 minutes per room and prevents years of annoyance.
  • Aligned joints: Lining up panel edges between adjacent rows creates a structural weakness and a visible ridge in the finished floor.
  • Too few fasteners: Under-fastening causes movement and squeaks. Follow the 6″/12″ schedule without shortcuts.
  • Wet plywood: Installing plywood that got rained on and wasn’t allowed to dry completely traps moisture and leads to mold, warping, and finished floor failures.
  • No expansion gaps: Butting panels tight together or tight against walls causes buckling when humidity rises.
  • Wrong grade for application: Using CDX as underlayment under thin vinyl, or using interior-grade plywood in a moisture-prone location.

Underlayment Plywood

Should I use plywood or cement board under tile?

For tile flooring, the ideal system is plywood subfloor with cement board (like HardieBacker or Durock) installed on top. Never install tile directly on plywood alone — plywood expands and contracts with moisture changes, which causes tile and grout to crack. The cement board layer isolates the tile from this movement. How do I fix a squeaky plywood subfloor?

Squeaks happen when plywood moves against the joist or fastener. From above, drive 3-inch screws through the subfloor into the joist at the squeak location — the screw pulls the plywood tight against the joist and eliminates movement. If you can access the subfloor from below (an unfinished basement), apply construction adhesive along the gap between the plywood and joist, then drive a screw up through a shim wedged into the gap. For widespread squeaking, the most effective long-term solution is to sister a 2×4 to the joist with adhesive and screw the subfloor into it. Prevention is always better — using adhesive during initial installation prevents most squeaks from developing.
