To apply it, multiply your square footage by 1.10 for 10 percent. So 180 square feet becomes 198 square feet of tile to purchase.

Step Three: Convert Square Footage to Boxes

Tile is sold by the box, and each box covers a stated number of square feet, usually printed on the label. Divide your total needed square footage by the box coverage, then round up to the next whole box.

For example, if each box covers 15.6 square feet and you need 198 square feet, divide 198 by 15.6 to get 12.7 boxes, then round up to 13 boxes. Always round up; you cannot buy a partial box, and the leftovers serve as crucial spares for future repairs. Keep those extras, because matching a discontinued tile years later is nearly impossible.

Don’t Forget Grout, Thinset, and Spacers

A complete tile calculation goes beyond the tile itself. Estimate the supporting materials too:

  • Thinset mortar: A 50-pound bag typically covers 60 to 100 square feet depending on tile size and trowel notch. Larger tiles and bigger notches use more.
  • Grout: Coverage depends on tile size and joint width. Manufacturer charts on the bag give square-footage estimates; wider joints and smaller tiles consume more.
  • Spacers: Buy a bag in the joint width you’ve chosen, commonly 1/8 or 3/16 inch.
  • Backer board: If installing cement board, match its square footage to your floor area.

Accounting for Tile Size and Layout

The size of the tile you choose changes how much waste you generate, even before pattern. Large-format tiles, such as 24-by-24-inch, produce more waste per cut because a single trimmed piece sacrifices a big chunk of material. Small mosaics, by contrast, conform to edges with minimal loss but use far more grout.

Layout direction matters too. A standard straight grid wastes the least, while diagonal and offset patterns require angled cuts that increase scrap. If you’re tiling around lots of obstacles, an island, cabinets, a tub, or multiple doorways, bump your waste factor up a few points because each obstacle means more partial tiles. Your chosen porcelain comes in boxes covering 15.6 square feet each. Divide 132 by 15.6 to get 8.46, round up, and you need 9 boxes.

For supplies, one or two 50-pound bags of thinset should cover the field, and a 25-pound bag of grout will handle standard joints in a room this size, but always confirm against the bag’s coverage chart.
