Rather than thinking of it as one epoxy product, it helps to picture a toolbox where each system is matched to a specific set of demands: chemical resistance, thermal shock, decorative appearance, speed of return to service, or heavy mechanical abuse.
That breadth is exactly why professional installers gravitate toward the brand. On a mixed-use facility, I might use a decorative flake system in the offices and lobby, a chemical-resistant novolac in the battery-charging room, and a fast-cure MMA in the walk-in cooler, all from a single manufacturer with compatible primers and topcoats. Epoxy Systems: The Workhorse

Its limitations are worth knowing too: standard epoxy can amber or yellow under prolonged UV exposure, and it is less flexible than urethane, so it is not my first choice where thermal cycling or direct sunlight is a constant factor. Urethane and Urethane Cement Systems
Where epoxy reaches its limits, urethane takes over. MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) Systems
Methyl methacrylate systems are the specialists’ choice when downtime is the enemy or when the temperature is too cold for other resins to cure. MMA cures extremely fast, often returning a floor to full service in an hour or two, and it will cure at low temperatures where epoxy and urethane stall. That makes it ideal for freezers, cold-storage rooms, and facilities that cannot afford to shut a line down for days.
The trade-offs with MMA are real and you should go in with eyes open. It has a strong, pungent odor during application that requires serious ventilation and area isolation, and the fast cure demands a skilled, well-drilled crew because there is very little working time. For the right job, a walk-in freezer, an overnight retail turnaround, an occupied facility that needs a room back by morning, MMA is unbeatable. For a standard interior floor with a normal schedule, epoxy or urethane usually makes more economic sense. I reach for MMA when speed or cold temperature is the deciding constraint, not as a default.
Decorative Flake and Quartz Broadcast Finishes
Aesthetics matter, and this is where Florock epoxy flooring shines for showrooms, lobbies, healthcare, and retail. Decorative flake systems broadcast colored vinyl chips into a pigmented epoxy base coat, then lock them under a clear topcoat. The chips hide dirt, add subtle slip texture, and let you dial in a custom color blend that reads as a high-end terrazzo-style finish at a fraction of terrazzo cost. Flake floors are my most-requested decorative build for spaces that want to look sharp without sacrificing durability.
Quartz broadcast systems use colored, kiln-fired quartz aggregate instead of vinyl chips, broadcast in one or more layers for a thicker, more robust floor. Quartz gives you a heavier build, superior impact and abrasion resistance, and an integral slip texture that makes it excellent for commercial kitchens, restrooms, locker rooms, and any wet or high-traffic area. Both finishes deliver a seamless, cleanable surface; the choice between them comes down to how much mechanical abuse and moisture the floor will see. When a client wants both looks-and-toughness, quartz is usually the answer.
Matching the System to Your Facility
The most important step in any resinous flooring project is honest analysis of the environment before anyone opens a pail. I walk the space and ask a specific set of questions: What chemicals contact the floor and how often? Is there thermal shock or steam cleaning? Direct sunlight? Rolling loads or forklift traffic? How much downtime can the operation tolerate for installation? What appearance does the client want? The answers point directly to the right chemistry and thickness.
A parking garage deck, a hospital corridor, a brewery floor drain area, and a boutique retail showroom each demand a different Florock build-up, and a good specifier resists the temptation to apply a single favorite system everywhere. Surface Preparation: Where Success Is Decided

PPE, Safety, and Application Practices
Resinous flooring materials are industrial chemicals and they demand respect. Uncured epoxy, urethane, and especially MMA components can cause skin sensitization and respiratory irritation, so proper personal protective equipment is mandatory: chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, appropriate coveralls, and, for MMA and solvented products, respiratory protection rated for organic vapors. I always consult the manufacturer’s safety data sheet for each component before mixing, because the requirements differ meaningfully between chemistries.
Ventilation and area control are just as critical. MMA in particular requires strong ventilation and isolation from occupied areas because of its odor and vapor. Mixing ratios must be exact, working times respected, and recoat windows honored, since coating over a body coat that has cured past its window can cause delamination between layers. These are the details that separate professional installers from weekend attempts. If you are managing a project rather than doing the work yourself, verify that your contractor follows the manufacturer’s data sheets and PPE guidance to the letter, both for safety and for warranty compliance.
