Garage Door Not Closing? Here’s How to Diagnose and Fix It

You hit the button, the door starts down, then stops and rolls right back up — or refuses to budge at all. A garage door not closing is one of the most common and most frustrating home-maintenance problems, partly because there are half a dozen possible causes and they all look similar from the driveway. The good news is that the vast majority of these failures are simple, and you can fix most of them yourself in under 30 minutes without calling a technician.

Work through the causes below roughly in order, from most common to least. Nine times out of ten, the culprit is the safety sensors near the floor.

Start With the Safety Sensors

Since 1993, federal law has required residential garage doors to have photo-eye sensors — two small units mounted about six inches off the floor on either side of the door. They shoot an invisible infrared beam across the opening. If anything breaks that beam, or the sensors think it is broken, the door will not close. Instead it reverses and the opener light usually blinks to signal a fault.

Check these first:

  • Alignment: The two sensors must point directly at each other. A bump from a bike or trash can knocks them out of line. Most have an LED — one green (sending) and one that turns solid when aligned. Loosen the wing nut, nudge the sensor until the light is steady, and retighten.
  • Obstructions: A rake, a leaf, even a spider web across the lens can block the beam. Wipe both lenses with a soft dry cloth.
  • Sun glare: Direct low-angle sunlight hitting a sensor can blind it. Shade it temporarily to test.
  • Loose wiring: Check the small wires at each sensor and where they connect to the opener motor for staples that have pinched through.

If the sensors check out and the door still won’t close, move on.

Check the Close-Limit Setting

Every opener has a travel limit that tells it how far to move the door. If the down-limit is set too far, the door hits the floor, senses resistance, assumes it hit an obstacle, and reverses. If it is set not far enough, the door stops short of the ground.

On the motor unit you will find two adjustment screws or dials marked “up” and “down” (older units) or programmable limit buttons (newer ones). Turn the down-limit screw a quarter turn at a time — usually counterclockwise to make the door travel less far — and test after each adjustment. The manual for your specific opener, whether Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Genie, shows the exact procedure and turn direction.

Inspect the Tracks and Rollers

A door that closes partway then jams or reverses may be catching on a bent track or a seized roller. Look down both vertical tracks with a flashlight:

  • Dents or bends: A dented track pinches the rollers. Gently tap it back into shape with a rubber mallet, or loosen the track bracket and realign it.
  • Debris: Rocks, hardened grease, or fallen hardware in the track stop the rollers cold. Clean the tracks with a rag.
  • Worn rollers: Rollers that no longer spin drag against the track. Replace worn nylon or steel rollers, which cost $2 to $5 each.
  • Lubrication: Spray a garage-door-specific lithium or silicone lubricant on rollers, hinges, and the spring. Never use WD-40, which is a solvent, not a lubricant.

Look at the Springs and Cables

If the door feels heavy, slams down fast, or the opener strains and reverses, a broken torsion spring may be the cause. The spring — mounted on a bar above the door — does the heavy lifting; the opener just guides it. A snapped spring, identifiable by a visible gap in the coil, leaves the full weight of the door on the motor, which trips the safety reverse.

Important safety note: Torsion springs store enormous energy and can cause serious injury. Do not attempt to adjust or replace a broken spring yourself. This is one repair worth the $150 to $350 a professional charges. Snapped or frayed lift cables fall in the same category.

Test the Remote and Wall Button

Sometimes the door itself is fine and the signal is the problem. Rule this out quickly:

  • Try closing from the wall-mounted button. If that works but the remote doesn’t, replace the remote battery (usually a CR2032 or 12V).
  • Check for a “lock” or “vacation” mode on the wall console — an accidentally engaged lock disables remotes entirely. A blinking wall button light often signals this.
  • Reprogram the remote to the opener if a fresh battery doesn’t help; the process takes under a minute using the “learn” button on the motor.

Reset the Opener

Electronics glitch. If nothing above applies, unplug the opener for 30 seconds and plug it back in to reboot the logic board. After a power surge or storm, this alone fixes a surprising number of stubborn doors. You may need to reprogram remotes and re-set the travel limits afterward.

When to Call a Professional

Handle sensors, tracks, limits, remotes, and lubrication yourself — they cover most cases and cost little. Call a garage door technician when you find:

  • A broken or unwinding torsion spring
  • Frayed, snapped, or off-drum lift cables
  • A bent or cracked door panel affecting travel
  • A burned-out or grinding opener motor

A service call typically runs $80 to $150 for diagnosis, with spring or cable replacement adding $150 to $400. Given the risk those components carry, it is money well spent.

What the Blinking Opener Light Tells You

Before you start disassembling anything, look at the opener light — it’s trying to tell you what’s wrong. On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, a certain number of blinks corresponds to a specific fault:

  • Continuous or repeated blinking of the motor light when you try to close almost always means a sensor problem — a blocked, misaligned, or unplugged photo eye.
  • Sensor LEDs: The sending eye usually glows steadily; the receiving eye glows solid only when aligned and unobstructed. A flickering or dark receiving LED points straight to the culprit.
  • Wall-button LED blinking often signals the lock/vacation mode is engaged.

Learning to read these indicators saves you from guessing. The manual for your specific opener lists the exact blink codes, and it’s worth keeping a copy handy.

Seasonal changes cause a surprising number of door failures, and they’re easy to overlook. In deep cold, the grease in the tracks and the opener’s gearbox thickens, so the door moves sluggishly and the opener may sense the extra resistance as an obstruction and reverse. The fix is to clean out old hardened grease and re-lubricate with a proper garage-door lubricant rated for low temperatures. Ice is another culprit — a rubber bottom seal can freeze to the concrete, and when the opener pulls and meets that resistance, the safety reverse kicks in. Breaking the seal free and clearing ice from the threshold usually solves it. In summer heat, metal tracks and panels expand slightly, which can bind a door that was already marginally out of alignment. If your door only misbehaves at temperature extremes, adjust the down-force sensitivity slightly and keep the moving parts clean and lubricated.

Preventing Future Problems

A garage door not closing is usually the result of skipped maintenance. Twice a year, wipe the sensor lenses, tighten track bolts, lubricate the moving parts, and run the door up and down while watching for hesitation. Ten minutes of upkeep prevents the vast majority of these mid-winter, late-for-work door failures — and keeps your opener running smoothly for a decade or more.

When the door won’t close and you’re short on time, run through this order — it solves the problem in most cases within a few minutes:

  • Look at the opener light. Is it blinking? That usually means sensors.
  • Check both photo eyes for alignment and a steady LED, and wipe the lenses.
  • Clear any object, cobweb, or debris from the door’s path and the tracks.
  • Confirm the wall button isn’t in lock/vacation mode.
  • Test from the wall button versus the remote to isolate a signal issue, and swap the remote battery.
  • Watch the door travel — does it stop at the same spot every time? That points to a limit setting.
  • If it slams or the opener strains, stop and inspect for a broken spring, then call a pro.
  • Still stuck? Unplug the opener for 30 seconds to reboot the logic board.
