You press the button, the door starts down, and then it stops and rolls right back up, over and over. When your garage door won’t close, it is almost always trying to tell you something, and in the majority of cases the fix is simple enough to do yourself in a few minutes. Federal law has required a safety reversing system on every automatic garage door opener since 1993, and that safety system is the most common reason a door refuses to shut. Before you call a repair tech and pay $150 or more, work through the checklist below.
I have troubleshot hundreds of these, and the culprit is usually one of a handful of things. Here they are, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the problem.
Start With the Photo-Eye Sensors
Two small sensors sit near the bottom of the door tracks, one on each side, about 4 to 6 inches off the floor. They shoot an invisible infrared beam across the opening, and if anything breaks that beam, the opener refuses to close so it will not crush a child or pet. When the door starts down and reverses, blocked or misaligned photo eyes are the number-one suspect.
Check three things. First, look for an obstruction: a trash can, a rake, a stray leaf, or even a cobweb across a lens can break the beam. Second, wipe both lenses clean with a soft dry cloth, because dust and grime accumulate and blind them. Third, check alignment. Each sensor has an LED; when they are aligned and unobstructed, the lights glow steady. If one blinks or is dark, gently nudge the sensor bracket until the light goes solid. Direct afternoon sun shining into a lens can also fool it, which is why some doors only fail to close at certain times of day.
Check the Track for Obstructions and Damage
If the sensors are clear, look at the tracks themselves. A garage door rides on rollers in a steel track, and anything blocking that path stops the door. Scan the full travel for objects on the floor in the door’s landing zone, and inspect the track for dents, bends, or debris.
Bent track is common after a bump from a car bumper or a ladder. A dented section makes a roller bind, and the opener senses the resistance and reverses. Minor dents can sometimes be tapped back into shape with a rubber mallet, but a badly bent track should be replaced. Also look at the rollers; a cracked or seized roller drags and confuses the opener into thinking it hit an obstacle.
Adjust the Close-Limit Setting
Every opener has travel limits that tell it how far to move the door in each direction. The close-limit setting tells the motor where the floor is. If it is set so the door tries to travel too far, the door touches the floor, senses resistance as if it hit something, and reverses back up to protect itself.
This is a frequent cause when a door reverses right as it reaches the ground. On most openers, the limit adjustment is a pair of screws or dials on the motor unit, usually marked “up” and “down” or “open” and “close.” Turn the close-limit screw in small increments, typically a quarter to a half turn, testing after each adjustment, until the door closes fully and stays down without reversing. Consult your opener’s manual for the exact screw, since brands differ.
Look at the Force / Sensitivity Setting
Related to the limits is the down-force sensitivity, which controls how much resistance the opener tolerates before it decides it has hit something. If this is set too sensitive, the normal friction of the door traveling down reads as an obstruction and triggers a reversal.
Cold weather thickens track lubricant and stiffens springs, so a door that closed fine in summer may start reversing in January simply because it moves a little harder. A small increase in the down-force setting often solves it, but do this carefully; the setting exists for safety, and over-cranking it defeats the reversing protection. If a modest adjustment does not fix it, look for the real source of the added friction instead of forcing the door.
Test the Remote, Wall Button, and Lock
Sometimes the door will not close only from the remote but works from the wall button, or vice versa, which points to controls rather than the door.
- Dead remote battery: The simplest fix of all; swap the coin-cell battery in the remote.
- Lock mode engaged: Many wall consoles have a “lock” or “vacation” button that disables the remotes to prevent unauthorized opening. Held accidentally, it can block closing from remotes; press and hold it to toggle off.
- Wiring at the wall button: Loose or corroded terminals on the wall control or the sensor wires can interrupt the signal.
Inspect Springs and Cables
If the door struggles, closes crookedly, or slams down, look up at the springs above the door. A broken torsion spring, which usually shows a visible gap in the coil, throws the whole door out of balance, and the opener cannot handle the unbalanced weight. Frayed or slack lift cables cause the same trouble.
This is the one area I tell homeowners not to DIY. Torsion springs are under extreme tension and cause serious injuries when handled without the right tools and technique. If a spring or cable is broken, call a professional; a spring replacement typically runs $150 to $350 and is money well spent for the safety alone.
Check the Lubrication and Rollers
Friction is the hidden cause behind many reversing problems, especially as a door ages or the seasons turn cold. A door that has not been lubricated in a year or two drags in its tracks, and the opener reads that extra resistance as an obstruction. Twice a year, apply a garage-door-specific silicone or lithium spray lubricant to the rollers, hinges, springs, and the bearings in the track brackets. Do not use WD-40, which is a solvent that cleans rather than lubricates and actually attracts grime over time.
While you lubricate, inspect the rollers closely. Worn nylon rollers or rusted steel rollers with flat spots bind in the track and stutter the door’s travel. Replacing worn rollers is inexpensive, and a smooth-rolling door puts far less strain on the opener, which often resolves intermittent reversing all on its own. A quick manual test tells you a lot: pull the emergency release cord, lift the door by hand, and it should glide smoothly and stay put when raised halfway. If it is heavy or drops, the door is out of balance and the springs need professional attention.
Rule Out a Frozen or Warped Door
In winter, the simplest explanation is often the right one: the door is frozen to the ground. Ice and packed snow can bond the bottom weatherseal to the concrete, so when the opener drives down it meets the resistance, or drives up because it cannot seat, and reverses. Break the door free by clearing ice from the base and, if needed, gently pouring warm water along the seal, then close it and clear the area so it does not refreeze.
Warping and moisture swelling can cause similar trouble on wood doors, which expand in humid weather and no longer seat evenly. A door that binds only in certain seasons points to this. Likewise, a bent bottom section or a damaged panel changes how the door meets the floor and can confuse the close-limit and force settings, so inspect the panels for visible damage if the door has taken a knock.
When to Call a Pro
Work the list from the top: sensors, tracks, limits, force, controls, then hardware. Most no-close problems are solved by cleaning and realigning the photo eyes or nudging the close-limit setting, both free and quick. If you have checked all of that and the door still refuses to close, or if you find a broken spring, damaged cable, or a bent track beyond a simple tap, bring in a garage door technician. A service call runs $75 to $200 plus parts, and a pro can diagnose a failing opener logic board or motor that a homeowner cannot. But nine times out of ten, when a garage door won’t close, the answer is a dirty sensor or a mis-set limit, and you will have it shutting again before the tech could even get to your driveway.
